We have been on NCL a couple of times, but will reply with reference to somewhat recent trips.

about 4 years ago we got a really good price on a forward suite on the Sun from Buenos Aires to Valparaiso. It’s an old ship, but we had a dining package and ate in the speciality restaurants. They also have that observation area in the front of the ship which had nice music in the evening. We enjoyed ourselves for two weeks.

‘’We did the Breakaway from NYC to Bermuda in the Haven. It was very nice and good service. The problem was too many people once you left the Haven and the cigarette smoke was just awful.

Lastly I got a super deal on the Pride Of America from SFO to Hawaii. I enjoyed the trans pacific part, the Hawaii not so much. That ship is rather strange, and not very updated. Again we had a nice suite and for 12 days it was about $4000 for the two of us, including drinks and speciality restaurants. We ate in the main dining room one night, and it was pretty poor.

So, if the price is right, and those things are not an issue, then go.

Same thing on my last NCL cruise.  But at least they offer those, even if they seem low-brow.  You can easily avoid them if you don't like them.  That was something I found lacking on our Alaska cruise on Celebrity - although they held silent disco essentially in the atrium, not much different.  A goofy newlywed game or glass blowing...  hmmm.  I just took the NCL Escape to Bermuda.  So many choices, and plenty of quiet time opportunities.

I have enjoyed my NCL cruises (best by far for entertainment), I have enjoyed my Royal cruises, I have even enjoyed my Carnival cruises.  I choose on intinerary and price.  I have done a couple of long weekend trips on Carnival, and the people watching is the best by far.  Bachelorette parties galore.  Don't judge, just enjoy.

Don't get me wrong, I thought the entertainment was much better on NCL than X.  My wife and I actually walked out of an Elton John Impersonator show on our last X cruise.  He was bad.

Thanks for everyones insights.  After hearing about the cigarette smoke and loads of passengers we went with Celebrity.  It will be the first cruise for the Constellation coming out of dry dock and we were able to get great perks so felt like it was a better deal considering the amount of money we are spending. Can't wait to sail!

Have sailed both cruise lines and agree with the general consensus.

The food on celebrity is generally much better (particularly the MDR).  I like the collective specialty dining options on NCL better, but Qsine is still my favorite.

The entertainment on NCL is much better, at least for what I look for.  The theater shows are much better quality and the smaller events are definitely more geared for a younger crowd on NCL (Dueling pianist, cirque shows, etc).  I stopped going to the celebrity shows when I fell asleep in one and dropped a wine glass.

Way too much smoke in NCLs casinos.  Not a huge gambler but like to spend some time on sea days.  On some sailings the smoke is overwhelming.

Ill sail any cruise line though because my criteria is itinerary, dates, and price.  Next cruise is Apex next summer in the med.  have yet to be on a cruise I didn’t like.
