Ah Kim, feel so bad for you.  Thanks for sharing I love to see that. Same thing happened to me 5 years ago.  X-rays look the same as does the carnage!  I was walking over a chain draped over a driveway entry and did same thing. Right foot got over, but left foot got caught.  I am leery about even walking over a nylon rope now!  Hang in there.  This is the worst part.  Once you get a boot it feels so much better but I cried a lot taking sponge baths until I could get it wet. Invest or borrow a shower seat. That was the best.  Taking the screws out was just an outpatient procedure so not bad.  As for your question on metal detectors, not sure if airport will set them off, but I also have an artificial hip and that sets off in airport but that and ankle hardware do NOT set off sensors on cruise terminal or getting back on the ship so you should be good there.

I got a little shower basket zip tied to the handles of my scooter and it helped carry things around.  I was back to work but have an office job in a few days and zipped around but I could drive as it was my left ankle.  It's a long time healing and it stinks.  Hang in there.

Those darn chains and things. Why do we feel the need to step over things? LOL  We did bring a lawn chair in and put in the shower and another outside the shower for me to get in there the other day. This is so bad for someone like me who takes showers 1-2 times a day. I love the water...any water. So I've had 2 showers since last Tuesday and I'm just dying! It's such a task to get up the steps one by one pulling myself up backwards on my bottom. It really wears me out. But ya gotta do what ya gotta do. lol

Taking screws and plates out are an outpatient procedure? Really? I would think it would have to be in a surgical room and you knocked out because they would need to cut you open just like they did to repair it.

I was told by my neighbor (who travels frequently for business) that he has not had any problems with the airport so far. But said once (pretty recent after having his surgery) they took his scooter from him and crutches and made him hop through the detector. 😲  What the heck! He said he was in so much pain.

The knee scooter my son in law let me use has a basket already on it and even a cup holder so I'm set with that once I start using it.

This just stinks!

All I can say is Oh My...Oh My...you certainly did a number on your ankle/leg....I am an  info person so thanks for the details....interesting to read and pictures are eye opening...medicine can do so much these days!!  But you have a lot of healing to do am sure you're up to it....and.....love the cast color...healing thoughts and prayers going out to you.

Yes I did do a number on myself. I'm a "picture" and info myself (obviously from the long detailed reviews I do lol) and actually love the gory stuff...just not on me. LOL

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers. It's appreciated.

Oh yay!  We're planning on going here next spring break.  We were staring at the giant mountain while on board the ship waiting to leave on our last cruise to Costa Maya  and once I realized what it was I pointed at it and said "THAT'S what we're doing next time."  The kids are going to have a blast.

Yep, it's definitely a blast! I hope you have as much fun as we did.

Wow, you really did a good job on your leg and ankle! 😲 I have one lovely 7-inch scar from my ankle up the centre of my leg. I did set off metal detectors in airports at first and had to step aside for the wand, but I never set anything off on a ship. I used to just point at the scar before I even stepped through. Now I don't set anything off and my doc said it's because tissue has grown around the plate and screws. Yes, I still have all my hardware.

I can't believe how grown up Sakari looks in that beautiful dress. And, thanks for the reminder of how cute she was at age 3!

Heather

I sure did. Interesting to know you set off the detectors at the airport. I'll definitely be ready for it if it does happen next time. I wonder what determines if you keep your hardware or not. Mine will be removed according to my ortho doctor. My son in law still has his and keeping it. You can actually see and feel the screws in his leg/ankle. It's...well icky.

Yea, Sakari growing up=😞

I love all your photos and clear descriptions. No one ever shows you the looooong walk out of the port area!

You mentioned you are Platinum on NCL. That discount for your tickets was the 10% platinum discount. Every little bit helps!

Just a couple of things from your post about all the changes on the Breakaway. Margaritaville is still open for breakfast without a charge. It is just a smaller buffet but much less crowded.  Ice and towel animals are "by request" now. Every ship seems to be a little bit different in what they are enforcing from what I've read.  Stewards seem to be told to be "out of view". I didn't meet my steward on the Getaway this year until the sixth day of a ten day cruise! She did a great job but I just never saw her.

Can't wait to read about the rest of your trip. I hope you are healing well (despite how it looks!)

Thank you and glad you are enjoying the review and pictures.

Oh, that makes sense about the platinum discount for the tickets. I guess I hadn't thought about that when I ordered them.

I didn't realize Margaritaville was still open for a free breakfast. Darnit! Although I have to say I didn't see anyone going up that way when we were in the area for breakfast. Most people must not know as that was the case when we were on it last time.

I mentioned to the room steward about the towel animals and told him how disappointed I was in not having them anymore and he didn't mention being able to opt in to get them. Hmmm...I guess he must have just not wanted to do them. 😞

Interesting about them being told to be out of view. There was always a group of them hanging out in the hall right beside our room (since we were at the end) and that's why I wasn't even sure who ours was for many days.

It looks exactly like something my son would love to do. Though I suspect he'd have a hard time with the ziplines (he's 4'9" but barely 70 lbs still) and I'm more of a waterslide person I think 🙂

Hope you leg feels better soon.

I did see A LOT of people that were pretty small on the zip lines and the water slides especially. I don't even know if they had a height or weight limit for them. We were so used to going to amusement parks that require you to be a certain height and here they were doing any of the tall waterslides and so on. I was kinda shocked but everyone was having a great time.

Kim, only you would write a review of breaking your leg in addition to the cruise review—that, ladies and gentlemen, is serious commitment to CruiseCritic!

Thanks for coming back and writing a new NCL review! It has certainly been a while—it's unbelievable how grown-up Sakari is. I remember her as being really little.

I found your experience on the Breakaway interesting; last time we were on her (2017), we noticed that the staff seemed a bit more run-down than usual. We since were on the Escape and the Gem, and didn't encounter that at all. Maybe it's just the Breakaway? Strange...

I was wondering—you guys have been cruising with Sakari since she was pretty little, and if memory serves you typically cruise in inside cabins. How did you handle early bedtimes when she was young? Our daughter will be 2 in October, and has been on 2 cruises already, but we've always wound up springing for the bigger cabin, all the while wondering how we would fare in a small inside cabin. Maybe Sakari had a late bedtime?

I know right... LOL  Two reviews in one. haha

I still can't believe how big Sakari is now. She hit this growth spurt and boom, she's almost as tall as me now. I miss her being little.

It's weird about the Breakaway staff because they are only in 7 month contracts and a lot rotate ships so it makes me wonder about the ship itself being the problem and not others. Just weird. What's the deal?

Sakari's very first cruise was when she was 3 1/2 and she took naps daily ....up until that cruise. That cruise she decided she was a big girl and no longer wanted naps and that was the end of that....for good. But, she has always been one that can go on FOREVER. We've never been one to carry a stroller on a cruise or anywhere we went. She's always done all the walking and kept up with us with whatever we do. We have also always been night owls. She can hang with us all night if needed. She's never been an early riser. Being in whatever cabin never made a difference with us. Inside, Balcony and so on...when we returned to the cabin and she was ready for bed, she simply crawled in her bed or bunk and went to sleep. No issues. 🙂

So I don't usually quote pictures, but the above is awesome!  Look how Sakari has grown!  And OMG, so cute in the first one.  What a brave little girl!

Loving your review as always.  We went to Aqua Adventure Park as well in Costa Maya back in March.  We only did the waterpark part, but looks like you had a blast on the zipline.  Wonderful pictures.  The Lazy River there is pretty cool isn't it?  It's like you're really in a jungle river.

Thanks again for taking us along on your trip.

Rest up...hope that foot is healing.  Seems to still be quite painful for you (no wonder with that awful break).  May each day be better than the previous.

Aww thanks so much for the comments.

Is Aqua Adventure Park the same place as the Maya Lost Mayan Kingdom? Did they rename it? Is there an option to just do the water part of it in the pyramid and not the rest? How do they know? Maybe the color of the wristbands or something?

Yes, it's still pretty painful but I'm working my way through it.

Well, time got away from me today and I managed to actually cook a lasagna diner all by myself. I'm worn out now. whew!

Sakari's first day back to school is tomorrow and she will be in middle school at the art school. This is going to be a new chapter in her life and a BIG change of being at the bus stop at 8:30am. She is picked up at the bus stop now at 6:10 in the morning!! So up bright and early at 5:30am for us...which is going to come quickly. Hopefully with the excitement and nervousness she will be able to sleep tonight. I also made some melatonin for desert tonight for us all. I hope it works. LOL

So...off to bed we go and I will probably be back at this early in the morning to finish out my Costa Maya review.

Have a good night everyone.

Thank you Mitsugirly and Family for another unbelievable review with spectacular photos.

The diving in Roatan had you three down to 20, 35, and then 50 feet. Great photos and video, the purple sponges look like ceramic art. The drama of the swim through channels on video and still photos took us all on the dive! We can see why you were all pleased with the 70 minute dive.

Lots of smiles by the Mermaid. Dad and Sakari on the dance floor is a time to remember.

Costa Maya zip lines and lazy river makes us want to go there.

Only a Nurse and cruise critic veteran would share pictures and narration on the Tib/Fib fracture!

My brother in law had a tib/fib fracture with similar hardware April/2018. He just completed a 15000 kilometer motorcycle adventure.

You will heal and be ok. Remember that there are many sending you healing thoughts.

More adventures and review to follow.

Mitsugirly, at the airport you can “opt in” which means you go through the body scanner instead of the metal detector.  Not that weird or unusual.  Hubs and I both have to do it, him because of his hardware from the broken knee, me for two artificial joints.  You get used to it.

BTW the color on your dive pictures is wonderful!  Is it your filters or did you use software to adjust the color levels?

Roatan diving was amazing! We really enjoyed ourselves.

Thanks for all the comments regarding the entire review so far. I appreciate it.

Thanks so much for the healing thoughts. I could really use them right now.

All the airports we use always has us do the body scanner anyhow (except for the person that walks with Sakari since she's still a child). But we've been doing the body scan for quite some time and I don't believe it's an option not to so I guess that will work. The hubby will have to be the one walking with Sakari in the future I guess. lol

I don't use any filters. That's just the motion underwater setting and when I click to save it, I have a saved preset that sharpens image for web. I never mess with the color levels...sometimes I only have to lighten a few of them because once you get down so deep, the sun goes away behind the clouds, or you are at a far distance from the object you are photographing, the image gets darker. Also if I have my fish eye on it makes the pictures darker but usually I remember to lighten it in camera so they turn out like that. I think the fish eye makes the colors very vibrant and I love using it. But those were shot with the fish eye on and off (I just prayed really hard that I didn't end up dropping the lens while I was swimming and using the camera with my other hand). LOL

Enjoying your review and pictures, Kim.

Just booked the Breakaway for next month and will be our first time on this ship. Curious what cabin # were you in? We booked an inside gty and got a cat IB that has triple occupancy, so hoping it'll be like the one you had as it does look bigger than the double occupancy ones we've had in the past with NCL. Thx!

After Sakari and I finished the lazy river, we went back to check on daddy. He had been wondering where we went and we told him we yelled for him as we went by on the lazy river but he was on his phone (yes, they have wifi here).

He said he wanted to do the lazy river, but we decided that we were hungry first. We flagged down our waiter and ask for a menu. He said something to the hubby, which he did not understand. We waited and waited and he never returned. Hmmm, that was weird for him.

I decided to go to the nearest restaurant, because I was seeing everyone gather in an area with food, and see if I could get a menu. I found a menu sitting on the table and started to walk away with it...going back to our chairs. Half way back to the chairs, someone stopped me and said that "This menu is no good for today. We have buffet"  So wait, the only option is the buffet today? We can't just order what we wanted?

The buffet is EXPENSIVE! $25 per person. YIKES! But everyone was hungry and what can you do? We all gathered and went to the buffet. We did find that Sakari was cheaper since she was a child. Thank goodness!

I do have to say they have A LOT of food...like A LOT! I didn't even take pictures of everything either. There was an entire other row behind all these with breads and goodies and so on. But a person can only eat so much too. I guess the good thing is if you buy it early on, you can eat there all day. We were pretty late to the game, so only ate once.

They did have free drinks: Habiscus Flower Water and Rice water. Now this was interesting....

We thought the Rice Water was pretty good but after drinking it for awhile, it started tasting like sugar. LOL  The Hibiscus...not so good in our opinion. Of course you can opt to not drink either and go right next door and get pop.

Now located directly behind where we were sitting I found some trails. You really didn't find many people back there but the employees would come back there to gather additional supplies for food and such. Every once in awhile you would see people visiting the park walk down that way. I did ask our server where it went and I (think) he said it went over to the other side...which is where the kiddie water park is located.

P4161251%20copy-L.jpg

There looked to be a huge termite tree up there. I wonder if they are the same termites that you'll find in Belize that you can eat and they taste like mint. Of course I wasn't about to try to climb up there and figure it out...I mean you could fall out of the tree and break a leg or something. 😄

The hubby decided he wanted us all to go on the lazy river since we were rude and went without him. We all went and had a blast but I did not take my camera this time around (imagine that) because my battery was starting to die and I knew I was going to have to switch to another camera soon. I figured I already had pictures of it so why bother.

Then when we were done Sakari jumped up and down and said "Let's go do the water slides!!!" Well, for some reason I decided I didn't want to. I know previously on water slides, they have a tendency to bang the heck out of your back and end up with marks. Plus I'd probably lose a few eyelashes and also for some reason I was being extra careful on this trip not to get hurt. (Imagine that).

I motioned for the hubs and Sakari to go on and I was going to go back to our chairs and hang out, use the wifi to post some pics to those back home and also swim. Off they went....

P8081157%20copy-L.jpg

My view...

P4161262%20copy-L.jpg

I'm just hanging out and in the pool and all of a sudden I hear "MOMMY!!!!!' I look around and see this...

P4161259%20copy-L.jpg

They were all the way up there at the top! GASP! I ran and grabbed my camera and started snapping pictures. I couldn't believe I heard her yell for me from that far away!

I mean they were at the tippy top!

P4161260%20copy-L.jpg

Ok, it's official....Sakari is not scared of anything anymore. She's not scared of heights, water slides, zip lining (and her recent trips to the amusement parks here....roller coasters). She was definitely getting her monies worth.

P4161263%20copy-L.jpg

After doing that water slide, they went back up and tried out the one below it...the green one.

P8081235%20copy-L.jpg

P8081221%20copy-L.jpg

Then they tried the racing ones. These you go down on a mat.

P8081227%20copy-L.jpg

However, one thing to know is that when you get to the bottom, remember how I said that you don't have to get mats to go on the ride and they are waiting up at the top? Well....according to the hubby, you have to take them back up if you rode that water ride. So, since they had to go back up there...why not come back down on another water ride? They caught up with me a little while after that.

I can't believe how close she can get to animals...any animals. They run the minute they see me within 10 feet of them. They watch me like a hawk. If I got anywhere near them like this, there would be no picture.

Since they were busy riding all of these water slides, I asked if they had went on the one that looks like the "toilet bowl" on the NCL Epic. Sakari knew exactly what I was talking about and said "no, but I want to now". They headed off that way and I went around to try to find out how to get to the end of it to take pictures. I guess you had to enter the pyramid and out a different way to get back there.

These slides were not working according to Sakari but the landing pool was going and water was coming out of them so I don't know what was going on.

P4161283%20copy-L.jpg

P4161284%20copy-L.jpg

Now prior to them going on this ride, there was a girl sitting down at the bottom in the pool area on the steps. I thought she was waiting for someone. Then when someone can down he came out of it acting like he was seriously injured. The sat there for awhile and some employees (like park medics) came to check him out. I guess coming out of the "bowl" he wasn't laying back and it slung him and he hit his head pretty hard. I believe the same thing happened to the girl that was sitting there. I know exactly what this feels like. The same thing happened to me on the Epic. If you aren't laying down and have your head back somewhat, it will sling you out of the tube really hard and throw your head back. I want to say the same thing happened to Sakari that time and she refused to go back on it.

So we waited and waited until they made sure he was ok.

P4161290%20copy-L.jpg

I was getting a little nervous about them coming down and no way to communicate with them about the events that were taking place below where I was. I just crossed my fingers and hoped that they laid back and didn't end up with the same injuries.

Out came Sakari with a smile...she was going pretty slow so I guess that meant no slinging around or anything. She just kinda came out and plopped into the water below.

P4161294%20copy-L.jpg

Next up was daddy....I believe he went a little faster and when he plopped out...he went back first. He mentioned there was no touching the bottom of this pool area and I was afraid for his ears...not only going under like that when you land but having to coming out where the water was pouring out of the tube. But he said he was ok and he didn't end up with water in his ears or an infection from this day.

P4161296%20copy-L.jpg

After they had completed all of the water slides (some several times and over and over) we headed back to our chairs.

Almost everyone seemed to be gone in our area and we pretty much had the pool to ourselves at that point.

And some water slide videos...

We did a little more swimming and then decided to head back to the port. It had been a great day...especially for Sakari and I was really pleased with the place. Sakari said out of all the port days, this was by far her favorite. She just ask me the other day if we ever go back to that port can we go back there. I wouldn't deny her of that now. I know how much fun she had. Next time, we will need Kendra and the gang to go for even more fun.

Headed out to catch a bus...we were told they run every half hour so you can go back at any time you want. However, toward the end of the day, they would pull up one after another.

Once we got back on board...I bet you can't guess what we did...

P8081376%20copy-L.jpg

Sakari just can't get enough of the water. Her and her friend Daniel playing in the pool.

We did run into Daniel once at the water park but never seen him again. I was shocked that they didn't meet up and go on the water slides and zip lining together. These 2 were pretty much inseparable during the entire cruise.

After awhile, we all (me, Sakari and Daniel) decided to take on the water slides. I figured there wasn't too much of a chance for me to get hurt on those and if I did, it wouldn't last too long because these are baby slides compared to the ones at the water park. LOL

We went on them over and over until I finally decided I had climbed enough stairs for the day and it was back to the pool.

The hubby and I made sure we met our vegetable, fruit and herb requirements for the day.

This became the hubby's favorite drink on the cruise and he would drink them one after another...until he just couldn't drink anymore. LOL

Kim, I was just amazed when I saw that picture of Sakari in her graduation dress with heels.  She looked so grown up, like a beautiful young woman, not like this little girl I always seem to picture her as.  It happens so quickly!

So quickly here's the story on my hardware,  Kim. The dr. told me to leave it in unless it bothers me, which thankfully it does not, because it would be a surgical procedure to remove it, so there's always a risk of infection. Also, if the plate were taken out, there wouldn't be the same support for the bones and I could be vulnerable to further fracture. 😲 No thank you. YMMV.

It was finally time to give up the swimming for the day and get some dinner. We decided to head to O'Sheehans because I just love their food.

The only place they had to seat us would be at the bar area dining and that was ok with us. We were seated and waited....and waited...and waited. I finally had to stop a waiter and ask for a menu.

At the time of ordering, I told him everything we wanted and the dessert. He said "You don't order dessert yet. That comes after the meal".   "So you mean I can't just tell you what I want now?" He responded "no, after meal". Ugh.

We placed our order and waited and waited and finally the food came.

The hubby ordered something on the menu (I can't remember now what it was) and it didn't come out. We questioned the waiter about it...and the communication was so bad and he didn't understand and finally we just said "never mind".  I felt like he understood but was playing it off.

After we were finished, the waiter never came back to clear our dishes or anything and we were sitting for a good 30-40 minutes. He would pass by us quickly and not look our way and go into the back to grab food and head out a different way. Then we'd see him somewhere else. It was getting ridiculous. If we could have just placed our order WITH our dessert we would have already ate that and been done and gone.

Finally I had to flag him down and I made sure to let him know we had been done with our food for over a half an hour and we needed our desserts. We already knew what we wanted, don't bring us the menu so that you can take more time to come back to us while we look over the menu and then take even longer to bring out our food. We told him what we wanted and we waited and waited. This was worse than going to any MDR.

Sakari wasted time playing some pool. But with only the white ball. LOL

Finally our dessert came...

The cheesecake for me, but I really didn't care for it with the marshmallows and some type of syrup on top. I dug around it to get to the inside.

The fruit plate and banana bread for the hubby and Sakari. They enjoyed it and what the hubby didn't eat, Sakari and I gobbled up when he wasn't looking. Hubby looks down-boom you cleaned your plate and didn't even know it.

It was a very long experience at O'Sheehans that night. I chalk it up to this unbelievable crowd on this ship.

There was a show going on downstairs in the atrium and they were dressing up and doing small skits that pertained to music. It was interesting to watch but very hard to see due to the amount of people both upstairs and down.

Finally I had had enough of the crowds and decided it was time to head back to the room where it was quiet and peaceful. Less chance of running into someone in that small interior room than there was in this entire ship. LOL

We packed for our excursion for the next day and headed to bed.

Thx!

Thanks and glad you are enjoying the review.

I really hope you have a better experience on the BA than we did both with the crowd and the staff.

We were in cabin 5731.  We loved the room for it to be an interior. I hope you end up with a nice one too.

I know right. She cleans up like a little lady when she wants to.

Oh my. Well that all makes sense. My ortho told me yesterday that I would have surgery again in 4 months to remove the screws going horizontal attaching the tib and fib together in place so the ligament in the middle of that would have time to heal and also the plate on the left interior side (which was where most of the damage was done and the ankle.) He didn't mention removing the plate and screws on the fibula, which he had said that it was mainly placed to align the broken area, which is way up high on the fibula toward the knee and help align and pull back the ligaments that were messed up and heal. I guess I will know more at future visits. Ugh...I hate all this. Yucky poo!
