QuickieGlenn Posted August 16, 2019 #1 Share Posted August 16, 2019 Looking at going on the Sun and some of the reviews are horrible, I know some people can complain about anything I know she is a older ship but had been retrofitted recently, I have been on The Dawn years ago, lately on the newer ships I need a handicapped room (and there are only a few that are balconies) and for her age I am not too sure Any information will be helpful ( I will post something on the disabled forum but this one gets more views) Thanks

Love the "small" ships and we have been the Sky as well. Most bad or not so good reviews are from people that either expected all the bells and whistles of a mega-ship or they are amazed at the people drinking a lot on a 4 day cruise (which most of the time is no different from longer cruises). You can get some crazy cruises around spring break/Thanksgiving/mid summer but even those can be fun and would be the same (just more) on a mega-ship. As for the handicap cabins unless all are booked by other disabled cruisers you can get one if any cabins are available in that category. I'm sure you know this, I've had to get one in the past and thankfully not needed anymore. You will have a great time and next year the Sun will be going to Alaska with longer cruises. Warbird Posted August 17, 2019 #3 Share Posted August 17, 2019 I have been on the Sun multiple times and love it. There are a few handicap balcony rooms, but are in limited supply. Brian is/was the Hotel Director. He will take care of you with out question. In the MD ask for Wilson De Souza. He is the Maitre'D. Tell him the French Vanilla Creamer Lady recommended him and ask to sit at Raul Galli's table. He is our adopted son when we are on the ship. Poppa John Did I say Wilson likes French Vanilla creamer and Raul likes ChipsAhoy cookies.
bostoncruisegal Posted August 19, 2019 #4 Share Posted August 19, 2019 We sailed on the Sun last year, and had a great time! As long as you go in with proper expectations - smaller ship, none of the crazy extras, etc. Service was excellent, food was good, and the ship itself looked to be in great shape, especially considering her age. RaiderDuck Posted August 19, 2019 #5 Share Posted August 19, 2019 We sailed on the Sun last November with some friends of ours. All four of us (we're in our forties and our friends are in their sixties) had a great time, and we wouldn't hesitate to sail on the Sun again. newmexicoNita Posted August 20, 2019 #6 Share Posted August 20, 2019 We have sailed her 4 times, the first when she was almost brand new, the last just before she went inot dry dock about a year or so ago. She is probably my favorite NCL ship and God know I have sailed enough of them. I will add, she is a tiny bit different from some NCL ships and of course you will not get the bells and whistles you get on newer mega ships, but that still doesn't change the fact she is a great ship with an outstanding crew.

The degree of HC (wheelchair-scooter-etc) can be a bigger factor than location having a bigger cabin entry door and bath showering facility YMMV Note that if you need a HC cabin and some non-HC guest has booked it - NCL may make an attempt to solve this problem - have a discussion with NCL Now as for the SUN - nothing wrong with this ole lady of the sea - you will like not having a taxing effort to go from end to end and top to bottom on this smaller ship and you certainly don't need the roof top amusement park ! Seany527 Posted August 20, 2019 #10 Share Posted August 20, 2019 I was on the Sun in May and thoroughly enjoyed the ship. She is in great condition due to the refurbishment. The layout is somewhat awkward with having to pass through Los Lobos then the Sushi bar to get to Cagney’s but imo it gives the ship some character and shows how NCL has evolved over time to accommodate its developing brand. Everything is downsized from the traditional mega ship (size of venues, buffet, etc) but overall it’s a nice ship which gives a different feel to cruising. Ewd0401 Posted September 18, 2019 #11 Share Posted September 18, 2019 Yes, smaller and older ship so don’t expect the Encore or anywhere close. It’s an inexpensive cruise but so much fun. Excellent service from one end of the ship to another.

The ship itself is fine, yes it's old and small but I actually don't have any complaints about it other than the smell of the smoke from the casino was pretty bad at times by the bar in the atrium. A little more ventilation would help. I had an oceanview and it was fine but the bathroom was the smallest i've seen on a cruise ship...ever. My main complaint was the quality of the food and the availability of food onboard. The buffet was tiny and the food quality was that of a school cafeteria. I'm not kidding here. I've sailed other NCL ships and my GF was on the Sun last year and even she said the quality has gotten way worse. The entertainment was ok...the cruise director and her staff were just "so so"...too many things felt forced. It didn't seem like they really enjoyed what they were doing. We were on the Sun 5 days and it's the first time I was kind of glad were getting off. Usually you dread getting off a cruise but this time...we didn't look back. SeahawkSiren Posted September 18, 2019 #13 Share Posted September 18, 2019 Here is a link to my Sun review. We were on the Sun back in 2016 (before the refurbishments) on a Panama Canal cruise. We loved the ship! https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2334907-review-of-panama-canal-cruise–14-nights-on-ncl-sun-october-14–28-2016-with-photos/
