Am I overreacting? Smoking on balcony.

On HOS now.

My wife was going to read on the pool deck. We managed to find chairs on a sea day and some guy sits down next to my family and starts smoking pot.

We bail on that situation and I send her back to the room to read on our balcony. When the couple next to us starts smoking Om their balcony. Which they have done several times a day. We can’t sit on our balcony without smelling smoke.

I would have reported the pot smoking immediately, as well as the balcony smoking and would have reported it repeatedly until it was taken care of.

I totally agree that it’s against the rules and people should not be doing it. Pot in particular has a very offensive odor. However , I don’t understand everyone’s concern about balcony smoke? Does it not dissipate enough outdoors? Is it just the fact someone is breaking the rules, and we need to feel superior by policing? I know it’s truely not about safety, otherwise they would never step foot on a cruise ship (yes, I know there have been incidents of people not properly disposing cigarettes). So someone please explain to me why the kindergarten tattletail attitude?

Yes, you can smell it.

Yes, it's a safety hazard.

No one is a "tattle tale".

Why can't those smokers follow the simple RC policy that smoking is only allowed in designated areas. Maybe they should go back to kindergarten. Reporting something that's against the cruise lines policy and effects others negatively isn't tattle tailing!

Hardly tattletale. You can smell it really bad. And they don’t give a heck. My son was on the balcony and came in and told my wife they were smoking again. So she went out on the balcony and closed the door loudly to alert her presence while the smoker said, we paid for this vacation too. They went in and she sat and read. 15 minutes later, someone came back out and started smoking again. They are forward of us so all the smoke goes right on our balcony and it smells disgusting.

They didn't pay for a balcony stateroom that smoking is allowed.

No - smoking on the balcony doesn’t dissipate outdoors.  If you are sitting on your balcony and someone is smoking it wafts directly onto your balcony - if there are a couple smoking it’s worse!   Smells - and is very unpleasant not to mention unhealthy secondhand smoke, particularly for anyone with asthma, breathing problems, etc.

It is also a fire hazard.  It’s not a kindergarten tattletale - it’s about people obeying rules, and being thinking they are entitled.

Was few yrs ago, right after Policy changed. only time had a connecting cabin. They'd go out and smoke while leaving Balcony door open, smoke would blow under the connecting door. Was really bad, just on Balcony wouldnt been such an issue. I could hear the conversation, heard what was said. Attendant confirmed what I heard...

That doesn't answer my question.

Not sure what you're asking. The Officer with Security in room said they were being Fined. Heard whole conversation. Couple was upset about Fine, threw connecting door heard them talking after they left. Attendant said same. As said this happened when they first Banned and were coming down on Violators. Havent had issues with smokers since, except for one Cruise in last 5yrs I'm always in Aft/Corner cabin of Serenade or Brilliance where smoke doesnt effect a dozen cabins along the side of ship

If it dissipated enough outdoors, then there wouldn't be people on here upset about smokers.  The fact that their neighbors are well aware of the smoking is all the proof you need that it's obnoxious and offensive to non-smokers.

Much better now but when younger had Asthma bad, exposure to smoke once caused Asthma Attack and collapsed lung when was 13. Daughter today has Allergies/Asthma also to cigarette smoke, worse then mine was. Smoke can get strong in Balcony's along side of ship. Worse when I had connecting cabin. They'd smoke with Balcony door open, smoke would blow threw their room and under connecting door and sit in my Cabin for hrs. My one and only Connecting Cabin, and only time I reported. We were doing a 13nite Repo with first 4 Sea Days. After dozen times first day felt needed to. Still a safety issue...

no, it does not dissipate.  as someone that is pretty sensitive to tobacco smoke i can smell people smoking literally a 1/4 away outside.  it is a really offensive smell that burns my throat and nasal passages on top of being a catalyst to bronchitis for me.

Because I have severe lung disease and smoke in any amount is a trigger for me. I paid for a balcony and expect to be able to use it. I don't think of my need to avoid a problem as "a kindergarten tattletale attitude".

I don't go on ships with promenades where there are stairs to the casino because the smoke comes up from the casino, I don't walk near the smokers, don't walk through the casinos. I do my part, I expect smokers to do their part.

We had to sell a house we loved because neighbours were backyard chain smokers.  We could never open our windows in the summer.

I'd be upset too.

And I'm also surprised that the pot-smoker has not warranted much outrage on this thread.

I would have reported both.  And if security gave me the response of "I can't do anything" I would have asked for the supervisor and kept his cell phone number handy so he could be quickly called when the violators were on their balcony.

I find that hard to believe it even happened.

Because it Doesnt dissipate quickly enough.  and i paid to be able to use my balcony.  which i cant if they are smoking.  Just like i cant use the Casino.

There is no superiority involved.  Just enjoyment of the space you have paid for.

What exactly is prohibited on ships?  Smoking or cigarette smoking?  If smoking is prohibited, that should include all smoking, whether it is for medicinal or recreational purposes.  Even if you have to smoke it for recreational purposes, the designated smoking areas should apply.

Meant to say "even if you have to smoke it for medicinal purposes, the designate smoking areas should apply"
