Basel to Amsterdam

Hello bruceh,

There is not a lot of difference between September and early October. On this itinerary you go through more than one microclimate and in addition to that the weather patterns can change within a seven day journey as the weather in early autumn can be unsettled. Generally speaking, the evenings are cooler and the mornings chillier as September advances and turns into October.

One thing to remember is that you get less and less daylight. This would be a consideration for me in choosing a cruise and I would not travel after 20 October.

You will of course see the seasons change in the vegetation so if you prefer green go more in the middle of September. If you like Autumn colours leave after 2 October but return before 26 October (if varies from year to year but on the Rhine I find it best the second week in October).

By the way, check public holidays in the areas you will be visiting as that could change excursions and shopping opportunities.

Hope this helps.

We travel from Amsterdam to Basel on 14th October, so hopefully will get to see some beautiful autumn colours.

Do you know if there are any public holidays on that route during the week 14th-21st October please?

Thanks so much for that link notamermaid.  Looks like we have no holidays on the river cruise week, and there is one during the week we are spending in Vienna, but we knew about that one luckily.

Your posts on the Rhine have made the anticipation even better, only one month to go now until we leave!
