Mykonos, ever to rough to tender ?

Recommended Posts

Has Mykonos ever been missed as a port of call because the sea is too rough to tender ?

Not missed it - but had some very tough transits.  You can dock the far side of the marina though.  The ship usually runs shuttle buses if they opt to dock.

Yes, it does happen.

We have been there a couple of times. Actually on time we were on the same cruise with you. One time tender operations were delayed waiting for calmer sea and and another time suspended for an hour or so. We were lucky and never missed the port though.

There is also one spot at a dock in Mykonos. Sometimes ships, incl. Celebrity, dock there. I guess it depends on who gets there first. However, if it’s to windy to tender, most of the times it‘s also to windy to dock there.

Check  the port load.  If you are the first ship in port, you will dock.  There is a ferry that runs you from the pier to the Mykonos downtown area and back for a few Euro.  No more bus shuttles.

I recommend taking a taxi up the hill to a "locals" restaurant called Oregano, promounced OR E GONE O.  Great food and reasonable priced.  Great views overlooking the port.  Won't rip you off like all the tourist places in the port area.  You can taxi up (highly recommended) for 5-6 Euro for 4 people and walk down.  There's a path across the street that takes you down to the port area.  🍷

We were able to to tender, but service was stopped several times due to conditions.  People who had waited till later in the day to go ashore weren't able to go as they eventually halted going ashore, but did keep the service for going back to the ship.

Mykonos can be tricky due to the winds at certain times of year. When these winds blow, ships may not be able to tender OR dock. (The dock, btw, can serve two ships, I've seen it.)

We have also enjoyed that Holy Land so much that we booked another one on Reflection for next year. Besides that our other cruises took and will take us to Asia.

Enjoy your cruise!

Two smaller ships like Regent or Oceania 👍... not the size of Celebrity ships though.

They always say tender for this port.  If you check the schedule of what ships are in port with you, and what times, if you are the first ship in port, you will not tender.  We've been there 3-4 times and never tendered.  🍷

Just got off Jewel of the Seas we missed Mykonos too rough for the tenders.

We were on that cruise too. Two ships, which were closer in to shore, were tendering but it looked to be not a great experience. We headed straight to Athens where we overnighted - much to the crew's delight as most of them were able to get off the ship (lots of bleary-eyed crew the next day :classic_biggrin:)

Our failed visit to Mykonos last week would have been our 6th or 7th time there and we have docked every other time, despite the itinerary showing as tendering. On one occasion the captain actually said he was racing to get to the port first so we would get the docking spot.

See, that´s how different experiences can be :-)
We have also been there about 4 or 5 times and always tendered.

We will be there again on Edge in Oktober - maybe it will be our first time to dock there.
Reflection will be there on the same day.

This is one of those questions like "will there be any rough seas on my 2021 cruise?"  So forget all the anecdotal stuff (we can give you plenty of those first hand examples).  The reality is that storms and rough seas can occur in any body of water at any time!  The odds are very good that you will be able to dock or tender at Mykonos because the weather during their "season" is usually pretty good.  But that is not a guarantee.  Stuff does happen and we have missed ports all over the world, often at times of the year when it should not have happened.

Mykonos is often called ''The island of the winds''. Statistically this island of Greece has the most cruise ships cancellations of the year exactly because of the strong winds. From around 500 calls every year, 30-40 are cancelled due to bad weather.

It was just a very simple question, really don't need warning about weather

i know rough seas can happen anywhere , even went though an edge hurricane on the Mediterranean on the Equinox

but it I have got some interesting replies from other members

According to cruisecal, you get in at 7am, so you will be docked -- not to worry about tendering.  Once you get off the ship there will be a ticket office with ferry to/from the downtown area for a few Euro each way.  🍷
