Heraklion

Currently on board Azura & Captain has just announced that due to high winds, that are not expected to decrease, we will not be calling At Mykonos on Thursday as it’s not safe to tender ashore.

As such, P&O have secured a berth At Heraklion in Crete.

we are due to get details of Shore Excursions delivered to our cabin this evening, however, wondered if anyone has any recommendations?

Thank You.

We also had weather problems and had to change to Heraklion.  It was a windy day and we watched the sea washing up the sea wall. Had a walk into the town and found a nice taverna in a square where we had lunch. Wandered around the town and shops and enjoyed our day.

If they do an excursion go for the beach break --- we did one with P&O last year and loved it. Have done Knossos too and that is worth a visit

Heraklion ---- mmmmm --- go for a walk up the sea wall, past the harbour to the end. It is a nice walk. Heraklion not so wonderful but better than floating about for another sea day as we did last April when we missed Mykonos.

To be fair to P&O we just about managed to tender in Mykonos 2 weeks ago on another cruise line and we did a boat trip as an excursion. Believe me, when those wind gusts got to 70 kms rather than 50 kms it was pretty windy and very, very choppy.

Look to the weather forecast I think you will not be able to visit Santorini too. Have they given you the updated itinerary? On the 13th of September when you are scheduled to tender at Santorini there are gonna be very strong winds 50-55 km/h... 😞

We haven’t (yet) been advised that we won’t be visiting Santorini. It’ll be a shame if we can’t as we are looking forward to it, however, no one can control the weather & safety comes first.

When we were there a couple of years ago we did a HERAKLION EAT & DRINK WALKING TOUR and we loved it. Georgios was our tour guide he meet us at the cruise port just outside to port gates. Excellent guide, here is a Link to tour photos they used some of my photos for their website (with my permission of course).

We visited Knossos and loved it but felt the tour was a bit rushed.

Did not like Heraklion at all.  We were dropped off for an hour after Knossos and had a drink in a cafe and were hassled almost non-stop by children begging with plastic accordions!! It was a very uncomfortable experience!

Knossos as has been said is worth visiting.

In Heraklion is a new archaeological museum that just opened 4-5 years ago with the original frescoes and finds from Knossos and other similar sites. It is fantastic and by far the best thing to do in the town itself. The originals are so much better than the facsimiles at the site.

Lots of taxis available when we docked. Some were offering tour prices for Knossos worth pricing up. Agree about the museum. Took a taxi there and then walked back through the town to the harbour. Walked the wall to the Fort its only a couple of euro's for entrance and worth a look. Never bothered by beggars. It might not be a pretty place its a working city with all the blemishes. Remember not all of Greece is whitewashed villages but its all worth the visit.

Thank you to everyone who replied to this thread.

just to let you know that we were unable to dock at Heraklion due to high winds.  Apparently whilst we could have docked, there was concern that we might not be able to push off the berth & therefore become stranded.

As such, it was arranged that Azura would make a maiden call to Souda Bay, which is on the other side of the island.
