Hobart Hop on Hop off buses

Visiting Hobart on Holland & America in February 2020 and wondered whether anybody had used the above buses to go to Mt Wellington.  It seems a much cheaper way to sight see, and does not take as much time as other tours.

Any other recommendations for cheaper sight seeing than advertised trips please

Today I received this reply from the Hobart i-visitor centre (five minutes' walk from the ship) and attached doc of cruise ship tours. I suppose these may change and some sell out. They have volunteers at the terminal with information who send you to the visitor centre to book what you want.

 

"We have a Hop On Hop Off bus that travels around the city giving you an overview of Hobart as well as the option to Hop Off at any of the 26 designated stops and another bus which come in 1 hours’ time. This is a good way to see the city and stops of interest include: Salamanca/Battery Point, Wrest Point Casino, Cascade Brewery, Cascade Female Factory, Hobart Convict Penitentiary and the Royal Botanical Gardens."

The HOHO Bus doesn't venture up Mt Wellington as far as I know, there used to be private shuttles which gave you about an hour at the top.

Yes, the same company - Red Bus DOES do a trip to the top of Mt Wellington, see the attached link.

I have not done the link, but used the HOHO last visit and was impressed.  The drivers commentary was very informative.

Thanks everyone for your replies.  I did find the information about the buses but hoped somebody had used them so they could advise on how good/easy it was to use.  I am in my 70s and travelling alone so do not want to be left stranded anywhere!

Jtsbusiness, i am a volunteer at the hobart terminal.  You won't get stranded in Hobart on a cruise ship day the hop on hop off buses are frequent.  The full tour takes 90 mins and you can stay on all day if you wish.   There is a separate shuttle that goes to Mt Wellington.

I suggest you purchase your ticket online before you get to Hobart.   Saved us having to queue up to purchase.  I am in a wheelchair, and found the service excellent. 

Pick up point a few minutes walk from the pier.

Thanks for the info . Mt Wellington is a must for visitors. The day we were in Hobart it was warm and sunny in the City ,but it had been snowing on top of the Mount.

There is a HoHo bus that goes to Mt Wellington but the disadvantage of that is that once you get off you have to wait an hour for the next one.

 

The regular price is $65 and concession price is $55. We asked a taxi driver how much it would cost for a return trip with a wait at the top while we had a look around. He quoted $100 although we gave him a bit more as we'd spent longer at the top than expected. It was good value for money and we were able to get up there and back, with plenty of time to see what we wanted to see, in an hour. Plus it was more comfortable than a bus would have been on that road. It was freezing cold up there so we were glad we didn't have to wait a long time for a bus back.

Was the bus price you quoted per person? Taxi?

Yes, the bus prices were per person. The taxi was a flat rate and worth it. Tell the driver you want to spend a bit of time at the top looking around.

Hobart has quite a good bus service called the Metro. You can get a Metro Green Card at 22 Elizabeth St, opposite the Post Office and down a bit.

 

I would recommend a 457 bus trip to Mt Nelson where the old signal station is. There is a cafe there and nice views across the city and water. If you have the time the 417 bus goes to Kettering where you have lunch at the Oyster Cove Inn and see the Bruny Island ferry.

Be aware that Mt Wellington often has its head buried in clouds so only go up if it's fine and clear.
