So if the grout appears grey, and when it's steam cleaned it's white again, what was removed?

Just trying to understand your logic.

And you had THIS grout steam cleaned by professionals when?  And you know the original color of the tile when the ship was built how? Sorry but do not see this as a huge problem and have never had any related to it on a ship.

Just trying to understand your phobia.

How do I know the grout is white underneath? Because I've been on newer ships, been told so by  crew members, and also looked under the shelf of the sink, where there's no foot traffic.

If a dirty appearance doesn't scare you off, would you swim in one of the ship's pools if the water appeared discolored and cloudy, or would you say something about it? Would you sit down at a table at the buffet that hadn't been bussed or wiped down?

And if you complained about it here, would you except the excuses that they don't have time to clean the pool or wipe down the tables....that you should consider yourself lucky to be on the ship anyway? That's all I'm hearing here.

I'm not going around the ship with a white glove looking for dust on the top of picture frames. I'm just expecting the one place where a lot of dirty ____ happens to look clean. Sorry if you consider that to be some sort of phobia.

When you go to the dentist and they remove discoloration from your teeth, were your teeth dirty?

You persist in calling discoloration "dirty". I wear white socks that are no longer white, they are more beige-ish, but I know they are clean, because I've washed them. I could bleach them back to white, but it would not make them any more or less clean.

Are you referring to bleaching? That's chemically changing the color of the dirt/stains that are still there.

Steaming removes the dirt.

Enuf! These posts are no longer humorous and are becoming more disgusting with each contribution. In my humble (and totally grossed-out opinion)! Suggest some of you try the "home improvements" channel.

I don't know about that.  This has been an entertaining thread and a nice change of pace from some of the more frequent topics that people like to complain about.

Hey, I am willing to discuss if it's okay to wear shorts in the shower on Formal Night, as long as you take the old coffee card out of your pocket.

We are getting ready to head off on another cruise and I cannot find my microscope and glass slides :(.  How on earth am I going to be able to check my bathroom floor, bed (for bed bugs) not to mention all the public areas on a huge ship? DW suggested we could pack our largest magnifying glass which might be the solution.  So if you are on a cruise and see a guy walking around looking at everything through a large magnifying glass, be sure to say high (any buy me a drink).

But the thing is that DW and I have been cruising (and traveling) extensively for over forty years and never bothered to wipe down our cabin, try to wipe down the entire ship, scrub the bottom of our shoes every time we are about to enter our cabin, wear a HAZMAT suit with its own filtered air supply, etc.  And yet, somehow, we have survived.  In fact, we have survived over 1200 cruise days without a single case of Noro.....but we have had our share of respiratory infections (generally spread by coughing and sneezing).  We do follow the common advice (from the CDC) about frequent handwashing with soap and warm water.

P.S.  Hope everyone has a happy Halloween season

No...I have no plans of scrubbing or steaming any floors while on vacation. This is regular maintenance that I would expect Princess to perform on a as-needed basis. Certainly after 15 years as in the case of the Caribbean Princess, it's long overdue.

Obviously Princess is not meeting your expectations as a customer.

Time to try another cruise line!

Maybe you can book with Karateman who is distressed about the water pressure in the shower...

If I were concerned about the bathroom floor -- I would simply put down some towels

to walk on, and go on with my life.

Please don't jump to any conclusions. You obviously didn't read my review of the cruise which is also in this thread.

We had a wonderful time, and as I said earlier, I will request extra towels to place on the floor.

Let's face it, the way the cruise lines do business with the cabin stewards having so many cabins to clean, they will never have the time to do an A-One job on cleaning cabins, on turn around day it's probably worse as they have so much more to do in so little time. We usually wipe down as much as we can but have never cleaned the bathroom floor. I know some of our cabins have had pretty dirty carpeting evidenced by wearing white socks when lounging around the cabin, the bottom of the socks were pretty dirty.

I once saw an interview with Howie Mandel, who is a huge germophobe...

When he checks into a hotel, he requests  a zillion towels from housekeeping, and

simply covers the entire floor.

I think one pool towel would completely cover the bathroom...

I found a few more folks who've noticed the dirty grout.

https://www.cruisecritic.com/photos/ships/caribbean-princess-303/member-3/66938/

This is a photo of our cabin''s bathroom floor. Note the grout color and the one square I cleaned with a tissue. (May 2017)

https://www.cruisecritic.com/memberreviews/memberreview.cfm?EntryID=667948

This ship was refurbished this year, yet despite that the carpeting was stained, there was missing grout in the bathroom and the grout present had some mold.

The only issue with it was the bathrooms were dirty, distingustingly so. There was mold growing in the corner of the showers, under the sink, etc. The grout was black and grimey, and in some parts, even peeling up. It looked like the bathroom needed a good CLR and pressure washing or simply, removing the old grout and regrouting.

stained tiles/grout, etc (as of August '19)

The bathroom was in dire need of renovation. Most of the grout was missing from the tile and what was there was quite nasty.

The bathroom had a new tub, but the floor was the old, little blue/green tiles with dirty looking grout.

Just got off yesterday morning. It's an older ship, and it does look that way (dirty grout on tiles, scratches on walls).

You seem to be spending a lot of time on this.

It is a thread that keeps on giving. But a non issue to me at least.

In 60+ cruises I have never experienced anything gross. If I found mold on tiles I would immediately let housekeeping know and expect to have it removed.  A few squirts of Tilex would do the trick and is an easy fix.  I would probably report missing tiles or gout, but I don't think I would lose sleep over it.

Bottom line CineGraphic, the grout bothers you and that is fine, but most of us aren't on your bandwagon.

I know what you mean. I am sure that Shakespeare, Dickens,  Hemingway, Tolstoy, and Joyce all complained about that very thing.  And those poets; why don't they just say what the mean?

And I think that's just as gross as you think discolored grout is.   Worse, actually.  I expect the bathroom floor is cleaned, but there's no way they're steam-cleaning carpets every turn-around day.
