Dawn - nor easter storm

I was just wondering if there were any itinerary changes to the Dawn yesterday or today due to the storm in the north east, since she is on the Quebec to NYC cruise?  Hope all is well.

Today the Dawn is suppose to be at Newport, Rhode Island. I do not see the ship on marinetraffic website. There is still lots of heavy winds due to this storm so i wont be surprised to see the port canceled since it is a tender port. 

 

Her previous port was on Portland on the 15 which was not effected by the storm.

I double checked the marinetraffic website, her port stop at Newport is canceled. Currently the ship is in Ipswitch Bay taking shelter from the storm,  any heavy winds and possible rough seas. Great idea by the captain as there is no rush to get to NYC

Noon Boston news said the ship rode out the storm off Ipswich last night.  Another small cruise ship was also in the picture. It was determined that it was safer to be on the water than tied up at the pier - saw the boats washed up in Duxbury, Boston Harbor has significant damage, too. Wind at Provincetown reached 90 MPH.

Other companies in the area as well - doing their best to shelter & stay away from the worst of this Nor-Easter ...QM 2 is in the area.

 

One of our BIL/SIL on the MSC Meraviglia on its first 10 days Canada/NE run ... left Quebec on Tues., last AIS tracking @ 12+ hours ago was SW off the coast of Nova Scotia, steaming toward NY & due back Friday morning.  

 

Quick check on Oceanweather dot com - static chart showing waves in this region to be easily 15' to 25' & 30' or more.  Windy App (mobile) around the Cape Cod, wind in excess of 35 knots, around 40 knots off RI coastline.  Pretty much no easy way to go around this massive fast-mover.  Here in NYC - wind at 25 mph gusting to 40 mph.  

 

All these folks are going to have stories to tell.

My daughter and sister are on rssc Navigator of the Seas  (they are the small ship that is there! )   Had a really rough and scary night...All are ok...Itineray was changed and waiting it out. Expected to port in Portland, tomorrow morning...

On the Dawn now. We took on fuel in Portland. Before we left Portland, Capt announced that they’d be cancelling  Newport Stop due to rough seas preventing tender. NCL was nice enough to replace it with an unscheduled Boston port day yesterday. Because of the last minute add, there weren’t any ship-arranged tours available to schedule, but we still had a wonderful day there with some of the best weather of the cruise.
 

After leaving last night, seas got a bit rough and ship turned and headed north, where we have been sitting all day next to the RSSC ship in a protected bay. Seas have  been alright here, though quite windy and outdoor decks are closed. They picked a spot with good cell service.

 

 The biggest thing to note so far is that they have run out of English muffins, and had to attempt homemade ones. 

Capt let us know that because of weather we’ll end up missing our First day In NYC tomorrow but expect to be in tomorrow night.  :-(. Glad I didn’t buy those Broadway tix for Friday night in advance.

keifernney - Thanks for your post and the information.  Just curious, what time were you originally scheduled to arrive at the pier in Manhattan - which day and time?  What time are you expected to arrive now due to change in schedule?  We are sailing Saturday October 19 - any advice ?  Hope you had a great cruise - anything NOT to miss - anything to skip?   Hope you have smooth sailing returning home - thanks for any info. - appreciate it.

Dawn was schedule to arrive to New York on Friday morning like at around the usually time of 7am.

As of 11pm, the Dawn did not move far:

Currently the AIS ETA data shows as 2019-10-18 19:59 which is around 8pm on Friday night.

MSC Meraviglia has managed to make her way into NY this evening, slowed from 15 knots earlier, south of LI waters (off Jones/Long Beach) to 5.5 knots approaching the Ambrose Channel (10 miles SE of) - ETA was given as 23:15 hours, probably get in between 2 to 4 am.   

 

QM2 is south 50 to 75 miles south of Montak, LI and heading toward NY (Red Hooks) slowly - around 10 knots.  

 

Norwegian Dawn has left the Cape Cod Bay (also ... see post above w. map) & going around Provincetown, MA cruising at 12 knots - AIS data giving ETA into NYC as tomorrow (Friday) evening around 8 p.m. which is very early (by 12 hours) as she is scheduled to arrive Sat. 10/19 at 08:00 (usually/common to be early by 1, 2 or 3 hours or more)

 

Supposingly, ships doing NE/Canada had to slow down - mandatory USCG protection rules - due to seasonal migratory whales being sighted ...

The Norwegian Dawn is doing a unique itinerary in that she was originally scheduled to spend 2 days in new york. This was her schedule itinerary:

Thanks, my bad - I stand corrected on the Dawn's planned arrival ... was looking at the itinerary on Ship Mate, not updated.   She's still hugging very close the coastline, AIS data - doing 12 knots nearing Chatham, MA (still off Cape Cod) and most definitely not going to get into NY in the morning ... seas still rough, choppy & windy ??  If she managed to get in - looked like she will be using Pier 90 instead (see below).  

 

MSC is now just off Coney Island in the Lower Bay, between Staten Island & Brooklyn - VZ Bridge is straight ahead about 10 miles ... should be turning north onto the Hudson River in less than 2 hours before docking (assuming river currents & tide, etc. are good - not sure if they need a pilot boat to come out & tugs to help her navigate to Pier 88 ... turnaround day, sailing again at 7 p.m.)

I am in Gem now. We just sailed from St. John and are on our way to Boston. Gem skipped Portland and spent the day at sea. We bounced a bit and the outside decks were closed but it was not a bad ride. We stayed in the Bay of Fundy until about 6:00 a.m. and then headed south.  
 

we should be in Boston in about 6 hours at the normally scheduled time. 
 

All of the above speculation about wave heights is wrong. The worst we had was about 10 feet. Winds were a constant 40 - 45 knots with gusts to about 55 knots. 
 

it may have been worse South but it was not a horrible or scary day.

Really hard to measure those wave heights especially if 9-10 --- 14 decks above the surface.

 

Who was doing the measurements ?

Was this from the Bridge or just somebody eyeballing it ?

AND how are the measurements taken ?

 

Last year at this time was on the DAWN and we skipped two port calls (B2B cruise) and going to

Quebec in the Gulf of St. Lawrence waves were high enough to knock out windows on deck 6

Le Bistro and the Casino port side - waves rated at 35 feet plus. Rogue waves ???

But unless you are in an OV cabin deck 4 or 5 and you feel you are going through a car wash

really hard to guess the height.

 

I wonder if all this is caused by wake turbulence - those migrating whales - LOL !

 

Something to note if sailing the New England Canada maritime at this late time - you don't need any

big ship amusement parks rides on the top deck - the whole ship will be rocking and rolling lingering

after effects of the hurricane season and changing autumn weather - best plan your cruise earlier

for the best smoothest ride with least amount of port cancellation - but if you go it will be exciting !

 

Some ships report that the piano (music) goes with you across the dance floor and musical chairs is

the popular fad - you wait in place and the chairs come to you - LOL !
