Horrible, freak occurrence. Having dove in Moorea a dozen times with sharks, never have seem an oceanic white tip, even when they used to chum the water.

It's important to note this from the article, "According to the International Shark Attack File of the Florida Museum of Natural History, there have been only six confirmed unprovoked shark attacks reported since 1580 in French Polynesia."

Don't think we have much to worry about 😉

I don't like to snorkel outside of the reef anywhere, or even just inside near an inlet when they chum to bring the bigger sharks in. It just doesn't seem like a good idea to me; especially in a place where the nearest hospital is a short helicopter ride away, and that's once they fly over from Papeete  to pick you up at someplace big enough to land near a dock.

Well that makes 7 in 439 years. I think we're good for a while.

  • 3 weeks later...

It is officially illegal to chum for sharks in Moorea, although many vendors continue the practice. Since this was a whale watching trip, I'm pretty certain there was no chum, just a bizarre, freak accident. We were in the lagoon with black tips just a couple of weeks after this happened, and we had vendors who were using chum.
