If you use your room card or casino card in any slot machine there is a keypad to charge your room. You just enter the last two digits of your year of birth and date and tap in the amount you want. It warns you of a 3% charge and transfers that amount to the slot machine for you to play or cash out. This charge however I have found can be paid with non refundable OBC.

Exactly right.  I just did this last week to use up stockholder OBC, which was clearly labeled on our account as non-refundable OBC.

Same here. We used our card on the slot machine on both the Getaway and the Escape and were never been charged a fee. I thought the 3% was charged if you got the advance while playing a table game

We've never been charged a convenience fee on NCL no matter what credit card was on file. Just shows as "entertainment charge" on our bill for the exact amount we got. Now, this is while using our card in a slot machine. I thought I may have heard the 3% is charged if you get the cash advanced while playing a table game or through the cashier.

The 3% fee is charged on all advances from your onboard account (both slots and table games), unless you are at a certain Casino At Sea tier level (Sapphire, Ruby or Elite).  If you are not at one of at those levels, then it was likely some kind of glitch, so consider your self lucky!

Well we’re certainly not a higher tier level so that’s not the reason. This happened on both NCL cruises in 2017 (Escape) and 2018 (Getaway). I have our final bills and there are no additional charges! Don’t know what else to say...

excuse my stupidity... but how do you use your cc in a slot machine???? I have always used cash... lets say I wanted to use 500 dollars one night do I take that out on one machine and then print voucher for the next machine????

Basically, but there may be daily and or cruise limits on how much ... and it’s our cabin key we’re using, not a credit card. It gets charged to your onboard account which gets charged to the credit card on file.

You can either print a voucher when switching machines, or just remove your card and the remaining money is transferred to your account Bank.  To access it, you will insert your room card and use the touch screen to withdrawal however much you want from your" Bank".  It's a longer process than just printing vouchers, but you also don't have to worry about losing the printed voucher.

So all of your withdrawal amount are even numbers?  Like $100 and not $103?

If so, then consider yourself extra lucky.

If you use your room key instead of cash, it will be charged to your account which will be paid for by the credit card you have on file at the end of the cruise.  I believe this will be coded as travel by the credit card company.  Travel expenses on some credit cards will give you a 3% rebate and therefore offset the 3% fee.

Correct me if I'm wrong as I have not tried this yet.

I’ve called Casinos at sea and opened a line of credit.  There is no fee when getting advances.

I know the minimum request is $5000 plus tying up bank funds PLUS having a hard credit check that may impact your FICO etc....... would much rather budget for my play, use cash on a regular basis and if I really need money and decide to get an advance on that same $5000 it's only $150 which in the big picture of a vacation isn't a lot.

Did you have a cash account? I've heard of people not being charged the 3% fee on cash accounts. Which makes sense as the 3% fee is supposed to cover credit card fees.

It would be a $100 entertainment charge. And a separate $3 service charge. Two separate lines on your room bill (not necessarily together).

This is going to be our first cruise in 15 years with a casino (we usually sail Disney).

I like the penny and nickel slots - can I just bring cash?  Can I put a $20 bill into the machine?  Or is there another way to limit it to the cash I want to spend?

I would really prefer it not be charged to my room.

Yes. Cash works fine (US Dollars). Machines accept $1 to $100 bills. Play as much or as little as you want. If  you want to play more, there are ATM machines in the casino.

The 3% service charge for charging  your room for cash is outrageous (although Royal charge 5%).
