Is Roatan Safe?

We are thinking of touring Roatan, Honduras with Victor Bodden, but have read some articles that Honduras may not be safe to visit.  What experiences have you had in Roatan?  Would you visit it?

I wouldn't go wandering off by myself, but with a well-known and respected local guide like Victor Bodden, no worries.

My hotel manager did a week of diving from Roatan a month ago - she came back alive, safe and sound.

Roatan is very safe and we found the people very friendly and helpful.  We did an independently planned beach day at West Bay beach and had no issues whatsoever when we were there this past March.

We did an excursion of zip lining and then to the beach and felt safe a couple of years ago.

If you have a tour with Victor --- or any of the reputable tour guys -- no worries. Like anywhere there is crime on the island but overall it is one of the better island destinations in terms of safety.  My son lives there and while they don't do out a lot at night on the east end where they live that is fairly remote the tourist areas are fine. Enjoy the island...it's beautiful, people are very friendly

We've toured with Ronystours 10+ times.  Always felt completely safe!

My daughter and I just got back from Roatan last week.  We used a local dive shop who provided the transportation to the other side of the island.  We felt perfectly safe the entire time and wouldn't hesitate to return again
