They don't care if its a first timer or 500th timer. If you think this is past the point of walking, have you? Just curious.

They do have late night bites starting at $8 per person. Looks like $7.99 for lunch which gives you your choice of entree (a sandwich (either pulled pork, brisket, or smoked turkey) with fries and slaw; a smoked turkey leg; or 4 smoked chicken wings with fries and slaw) and dessert. 1

And every time we drive by, the restaurant is packed. Chicken Fried Steak is $21. Maybe for you, it's not worth it- but to the general population, it may be worth it. At any rate, for those curious, here's the Dinner and Late Night Menus as well. For what it's worth, the Late Night Menu is essentially the same as the Lunch Menu. From my perspective living in BBQ country, $12.95 for two meats, two sides, and a dessert isn't bad. Here in the Triangle, The Pit (featured on a couple Food Network shows) charges $18.99 for 2 meats and 2 sides (no dessert) at dinner and $24.99 for 3 meats and 2 sides (no dessert). Sam Jones BBQ (owned by the family that owns the nationally known Skylight Inn) charges $15.99 for their 2 meat/2 side combo and $17.99 for their 3 meat/2 side combo. Again, dessert is separate. 1

neverbeenhere Posted November 18, 2019 #37 Share Posted November 18, 2019 Yup, cruising has changed over the years. Now, it's pay to play. If you don't like it, I think you are going to have to move to another way of vacationing/traveling. We still find enough quality in the free food to satisfy us for a good portion of our cruise time. We choose to pay for the other part of the time.

They don't care if its a first timer or 500th timer. Gotta ask. What free venue or items did they remove? All they did was added another specialty restaurant. No different than adding Hooked to Symphony. And surprisingly enough even though the Oasis is fresh out of drydock she still has the same number or fewer specialty restaurants out of all the Oasis class ships. Of course the cruise lines are going to keep adding extra cost options to their ships, they are after all in the business to make money and not keep things the way they were 20 years ago. Now had they removed Sorrento's or the Doghouse then you would have a legitimate complaint. Until then I am going to use my UDP and fully enjoy the extra choices that Royal has added to the ship.
HBE4 Posted November 18, 2019 #39 Share Posted November 18, 2019 (edited) I think I would be more upset if a formerly free (included) food venue was changed to for-fee specialty, like Park Cafe or Sorrento's. As it stands now, it's a new restaurant that never existed before serving food that you previously could not get on a cruise ship so, I can choose to not go to it and won't be missing a thing. And if it draws people away from the Windjammer or Park Cafe, that's a positive in my book. I wonder how late the "late night" menu is? I always felt that was one area where Royal was lacking. Other than pizza and finger sandwiches, there is not much to eat for the late night crowd. I could take a break from the casino and save a ton of money by buying the $8 sammie 😋 Edited November 18, 2019 by HBE4 7 1
HBE4 Posted November 18, 2019 #40 Share Posted November 18, 2019 Also, $12-$15 for dinner is a nice alternative to the $42 and up Chops. About on par for JR with a much better selection and (hopefully, fingers-crossed) better quality.

There really are only 2 options, either accept it and continue to cruise or make a statement with your wallet and don't book. You forgot option #3: make a statement with your wallet, don't book and send a "strongly worded" e-mail as to why you are not booking!

I'll third it - I don't gamble but if it's open late it'd be nice to hit that up after a show or some night swimming. I'm a little surprised they also didn't do like a slider option for the sandwiches - 3 slider sized sandwiches (mix and match between the three proteins) with no side. That'd hit the spot for sure. I'll still be interested to see what their sauce lineup would be. In my ideal set-up where you're going for BBQ's greatest hits like that it'd be: Eastern NC Vinegar & Pepper Western NC Tomato Central SC Mustard Memphis Kansas City And...blech...Alabama White

Joseph2017China Posted November 18, 2019 #49 Share Posted November 18, 2019 Big ships, many choices. Some included, others pay for. Like so many things in life. Old days, the ship did not have all these choices, and so no need to think about it. Ships were small, and space limited. Now it is a vacation destination on the sea. There are many cruise lines, and many choices. Pick what you want, and be happy
