Are there any wine shops near the pier in Southampton to purchase bottles of wine?

Yes, but there are many more questions to give you a good answer.

#1 "Pier" depends on which cruise line you're sailing on

#2 How are you getting to Southampton?  Private Transfer? Coach? Train?

#3 How do you intend to get between #2 and the wine store, and then to #1

Assuming;

City Cruise Terminal,   Train,   Walking:

Majestic Wine is across the street (called Western Esplanade) from the southern entrance of the railway station

It's not really possible to give all of the answers unless you provide some more details.

Southampton has four cruise terminals, and it depends which.

Name your ship / date and we can hazard a good guess which is your terminal and therefore the easiest wine shop/s.

Easiest also depends on your transportation to Southampton

- by train. Majestic Wines is opposite the station exit. Specialists, knowledgeable staff.

- by National Express bus. The rear entrance to ASDA (think "Walmart") is accessed thro the white portico pedestrian entrance to the multi-storey carpark opposite the coach station and elevator up to the store. Grocery store, decent selection, low prices.

- by car. A local driver will know those and others.

But if your driver's not a local & you're coming from London direction probably easiest for your driver to swing off the M3 motorway at junct 9 (signed Winnall) to a Tesco grocery super-store adjacent to the motorway on the outskirts of Winchester.

- if you're overnighting in Southampton, your hotel will tell you about local outlets.

But if travelling by ship's transfer bus, those buses go direct to the cruise terminal.

The only cruise terminal that might be walkable, depending on time available, is City Cruise Terminal to the Co-op Welcome grocery store next to the Premier Inn West Quay, just past Carnival's UK head offfice.

A ten-minute walk e/w if you cut through the Holiday Inn carpark

Or buy at the airport. Most terminals have a Marks & Spencer store but there's no "duty-free on arrival" - it's in or beyond the arrivals hall.

Our ship is the Island Princess. I do not know which pier that would be. We have a Princess transfer from  Heathrow, so we would walk to wine store if nearby.

Or..we can check the airport, as suggested.

Thanks!

Princess normally berth at one of two cruise terminals ......

Mayflower Terminal is a mile from the nearest port gate, plus another 1/4 mile or further to the nearest outlet, Majestic.

Not worthwhile.

Ocean Terminal is in a different part of the docks, the nearest outlet is the Co-op foodstore in High Street at the junction with Briton Street - a fairly simple walk of 15 minutes e/w.

But altho that may seem sensible now, on the day - with joining the line for registration and that leading to security and that leading to the ship, the desire to get aboard, the hand luggage and watching the clock - most folk wouldn't bother.

Even on arrival at your London airport, after a long flight & hauling your luggage while hunting an outlet then returning to the meeting place for your Princess rep. won't appeal.

So consider the duty-free at your home airport (if it sells wine) or even pack a couple of bottles from your local store. Prices of popular wines in the UK are £5 to £9 a bottle.

Or you could save money and switch from the expensive Princess transfer to National Express. They use the same coaches; you would just have to make your own way to the terminus at Heathrow and then from the coach station in Southampton.

Many others use this method.

Unless you're already booked on ship's transfer & can't cancel, I agree with Bob.

But a few caveats

- the frequency of Nat Express coaches isn't great & you need to pre-book. Allow a minimum of 90 minutes between scheduled landing time & coach.

- The Nat Express coach stops are on the concourses in front of T4 and T5, just as convenient as for Princess coaches. But for T2 and T3 there's a well-signed 10 minute walk to Heathrow central bus station.

- just to clarify, the Nat Express coaches are similar to ships' transfer coaches but they're not "the same coaches",

- All Nat Express coaches have a washroom & in-seat wifi. That's pot-luck with ships' transfers

- Drivers load your bags with both options. Nat Express have a luggage limit, 2 x 44lb cases plus hand-luggage. Not strictly enforced, but unsuitable if you have a mountain of luggage.

- at Southampton coach station, choose either

- ---- one stays with the luggage while the other goes to ASDA for the wine, then take a taxi from the rank at the coach station.

- ---- or both go up to ASDA with luggage, then exit the store at the front (same level as the store) and take a taxi from the rank there.

- taxi fare about £7 to either cruise terminal.

I can tell you right now that as a shareholder of Carnival (incl Princess), you really want to take the cruise transfer.  However, if I wasn't a shareholder, I would definitely agree with JB

🙂
