Are there things to do near this hotel and is it in a safe area?

Right in the middle of everything and literally across the street from the cruise pier. Quite safe and populated at pretty much all time of day. Frankly I think the hotel itself is a bit bland and there are far more interesting places to stay that are close by (looking at you Hotel El Convento!) but if the price is right and you want to be centrally located in OSJ and not on a beach, the Sheraton will work.

We've stayed at the Old Town Sheraton a couple of times....loved the location...right across from the Old Town Pier but this particular Sheraton no longer has a casino...It's been converted into a Walgreen's.

ÒP should double check which Sheraton they're staying at. The Sheraton Hotel that has a casino is next to the PR Convention Center and has nothing but an Olive Garden, Sizzler and a Longhorn Steakhouse within walking distance. They would need a taxi or Uber to get to Old San Juan. The Sheraton at Old San Juan is across the street from the pier (the other one is about 1/2 a mile from the Panamerican Pier) and while it used to have a casino, That's the one where the former casino space was converted into a Walgreen's.
