Bayonne: Alternative to EWR

Recommended Posts

Now that Southwest has pulled out of EWR flying into Bayonne for a cruise is more problematic and expensive.

Any alternatives would be appreciated. LGA or JFK (the cost to Bayonne and the estimated time for an early Sat or Sun arrival),

would these airports make sense? Thanks for any insight.

A quick look says that United wants $177. rt from ORD>EWR in July 2020.  American slightly higher.  Reasonably certain that bags will be extra, unlike Southwest.

In terms of airports that are in the immediate vicinity, you are left with LGA and JFK (unless you want to charter a private jet and fly into Teterboro Airport nearby which I'm assuming isn't the case). LGA isn't in great shape right now with the massive, multiyear overhaul they are doing. JFK is huge but has a reasonably decent AirTrain option to get you to Jamaica and then into the city or of course just hiring a car service/taxi to get to Bayonne. Westchester Airport (HPN) is also an alternative although is a little bit further out but there could be some deals there-- along those lines Trenton Mercer Airport also has some low cost airline options but either of these two would require a car service to get you up to Bayonne which might wipe out savings and add time.

An off the wall idea would be to fly into Philadelphia International and take the train up. This will add a bunch of time and might not be that less expensive when you factor in the taxis/ubers/train it will require to get you up. The airline deal would need to be really, really good to even consider it.

JFK is probably best bet after EWR - but LGA should not really be a problem on a Saturday or Sunday.  Flights to HPN are generally a lot more expensive, and ground transportation options scarcer.

If you are flying in the day of the cruise, forget any idea of inexpensive public ground transport from airport - it would take too much time.  Your best bet is still to fly to EWR - it’s convenience to Bayonne would mean that any fare increase due to Southwest ceasing service could not match higher cost of car service from any alternate airport.

It will take approximately an hour on a Sat or Sun am from JFK to Bayonne. Belt Parkway to Verrazano thru Staten Island and then across the Bayonne Bridge.

The cost of car service transportation between JFK and Cape Liberty will run $120+ each way when you add up the base price, tolls, and 18-20% tip on the base price.  NYC cabs and Uber/Lyft are not the best options between JFK and Cape Liberty.  We recommend Dial7 and Carmellimo.

Uber/Lyft are priced exactly the same as Carmel/Dial 7 and frankly think they can be a little more convenient since you don't have to plan in advance.

Uber estimate, including tolls and tip, from JFK to Cape Liberty is $135.70 and Carmel quote is $135.20 including tolls and tip. Direct from both of their websites.

Just fly into EWR and don't over complicate this.  You are coming from Chicago...The headquarters and one of United's main hubs into their NY area hub.  You will have the most flight options with the cheapest ground transport to the port with them. (depending on which way they are landing and which side of the plane you are on you will see the port when you land as it's basically just on the other side of the NJTP).  Get over the whole southwest thing. by the time you land and either JFK or LGA and figure in the cost of transportation and time to get to Bayonne are you really saving anything over just going into EWR (on whatever airline) and a short cab/uber ride to the port?

Good post. Flying from to Chicago to EWR is as easy/cheap as to any other airport.  If you are cruising from Bayonne EWR is closest by far. Only if you are thinking of spending time in New York City could it make sense to pick LGA or JFK — otherwise, it would be a foolish waste of both time and money

This is excellent advice.   It would be one thing if the OP were coming from a small town with limited air service.

OP: perhaps you don't realize it, but it would be a huge and expensive hassle to fly into JFK or LGA just to head over to Bayonne, which is so close to EWR.   (If you intend to stay in Manhattan for a while pre-cruise, that's a different matter.)

Flying into JFK or LGA coupled with the cost of  ground transportation from JFK or LGA to Bayonne and back are probably going to be more than equal to the price of flying into EWR on a carrier other than SW.  Not to mention the time and inconvenience.  I'd just fly into EWR.
