Recommended Posts

The Royal Albatross web cam that also gives a great view of cruise ships entering the harbour at Taiaroa Heads , Dunedin , is having a massive makeover .

Dept of Conservation is working in conjunction with Corning University , New York and the new cam will join their system and be viewed by millions worldwide.
The cam is down at the moment while the update takes place . Should go “live” shortly.

You might be able to see the ships coming up the channel after just leaving port and then crossing to the other side of the harbour before finally passing the camera at close range.

The Royal Cam's Facebook page and Twitter account, linked here, https://www.doc.govt.nz/royalcam. Post clips of the more happening events...recent hatching, placement of hatched chick back into the nest, daily weighing of chick, etc. they have posted ships as well.  Watching live a few days ago about 7:40am local time, Saw a Viking ship enter port. Assume ships stay off shore until close to docking time to save fees? Watching the live cam is addictive. Thanks to the NZ conservation dept for providing.

I was watching when a researcher came and checked on the chick and state of the nest.

Demonstrated how really big those birds are compared to a human.

The Otago Harbour channel is fairly tricky. The ships have to wait for a harbour pilot to board them before entering the harbour, they can't just go in when it suits them.
