harryw Posted January 2, 2020 #1 Share Posted January 2, 2020 My wife is a fussy eater and we’re contemplating this venue for an upcoming Koningsdam cruise. She doesn’t like spicy dishes.

FWIW make sure you understand which of the dipping sauces are very spicey. Edited January 2, 2020 by Crew News
SarahCBL Posted January 2, 2020 #3 Share Posted January 2, 2020 It's not spicy. My husband doesn't like spicy food and he orders this every time. We think it is the best thing we have ever had on a Holland America cruise! We also wish Tamarind was on every boat!

imescaping Posted January 2, 2020 #5 Share Posted January 2, 2020 (edited) I don’t tolerate spicy food well. I had the wasabi and soy encrusted beef in Tamarind on Nieuw Amsterdam in November. It was excellent and I did not find it spicy. That said it could vary from chef to chef or even day to day. As for the sauces, the one we were told was hottest was less hot than one of the others, my DH loves spicy food and was a little disappointed. harryw Posted January 2, 2020 Author #6 Share Posted January 2, 2020 Thank You for the reassurance. I love spicy food but want the missus to be happy. This will be our third HAL cruise, the first two were on the Nieuw Statendam. We declined Tamarind then because the revolving menus we saw were disappointing. But the new permanent one posted on CC seems wonderful. Prior to HAL, we sailed Oceania many times and loved Red Ginger. Any dessert recommendations? Krazy Kruizers Posted January 2, 2020 #7 Share Posted January 2, 2020 I just ask them to not put the Wasabi on my steak. Never a problem.
bobert Posted January 2, 2020 #8 Share Posted January 2, 2020 I had it and I didn't specify anything and it definitely was not spicy at all. But it was very good.
canadianbear Posted January 2, 2020 #9 Share Posted January 2, 2020 I always inform them I can not tolerate spicy food-they will help your wife with the menu if she tells them up front. They are excellent there.
gknep Posted January 2, 2020 #10 Share Posted January 2, 2020 I can only echo what others have said. I was hesitant to order it last May but I did it anyway and it turned out to be the best steak I have ever had on a cruise ship. It was truly fantastic. loupana Posted January 2, 2020 #11 Share Posted January 2, 2020 (edited) My wife did find it spicy, but everyone's tastes are so different. If you are worried just ask not to put wasabi on or make sure they know your limits as others suggested. Here is a photo of my wife's dish. Edit to add she loved it... RuthC Posted January 2, 2020 #12 Share Posted January 2, 2020 Your wife can order it without the wasabi. I always do, and it is served that way without question or comment. It is an excellent steak, by the way.
Daisyloo Posted January 3, 2020 #13 Share Posted January 3, 2020 I love the mango posset dessert in the Tamarind. If you want a lighter dessert, the trio of sorbet is very good. One is lychee, one is lemony, and the other is basil. Sounds odd, but delicious.
