Exploring NASA day before Galveston cruise - YES or NO?

Recommended Posts

Hey group - searched NASA and didn't find much but hotel suggestions.  We are trying to decide what to do the day before we set sail  We are a group of 6, 4 adults, 2 kids (10 & 12) and we arrive at IAH at 10:00am on Friday.  Someone suggested NASA.  Looks really cool, but all the getting to and from.  Airport to hotel cause we will have bags, so will have to stay close to Johnson Space Center.  Then hotel to and from NASA.  And then transportation to the port on Saturday morning.

Anyone visited NASA the day before?  Other suggestions of ways to spend our Friday before sailing?

I've looked at the boards and it seems to be a mixed bag of suggestions and experiences on Uber, Shuttle, Limo, etc.   TIA!

There's a lot to do in Galveston too!

Moody Gardens, the Railroad Museum and a stroll on the strand.

Pelican Island has the maritime museum.  Harbor cruises, pleasure pier.

But, NASA is also prett interesting.  In that area is also the Kemah Boardwalk.

Are the kids interested in space or anything STEM?  If so - speaking as a perennial space kid at heart - NASA is a must.  Space Center Houston is very kid friendly, with lots of hands-on and interactive exhibits.  They can even learn a little history while they're there.  And yes... if they've never done it before, they can touch an actual moon rock!

If you wanted to break up the stay, there are plenty of cheap hotels around JSC... look for properties in Webster or League City.  Or, you could pick one in the middle like the Hampton Inn in League City.

If you are just looking for a clean low-key place to stay, I have stayed at the Super 8 near NASA a couple of times.  https://www.wyndhamhotels.com/super-8/houston-texas/super-8-houston-nasa-webster-area/overview.  There are a few restaurants within walking distance of the hotel, and it would be a short Uber/Taxi to and from NASA.

I did it last year. Stay in Webster. It’s right by the space center and hotel are much cheaper than they are in Galveston. Ive cruised out of Galveston the last three years in February and I never stay in Galveston. Here you’ll find related blog entries from last year including the space center trip.
