As I understand it, the Amsterdam was able to disembark ALL of their passengers in Freemantle.  Of course, this may be due to HAL's youthful passenger demographics. ;)

Passengers from the Amsterdam who could not fly due to medical reasons were transferred to the Pacific Princess which was in Fremantle at the same time.  The PP is on it's way to LA to disembark their own passengers who could not fly along with the ones from HAL and I believe some from the Seaborne world cruise as well.  

 

The Amsterdam is taking it's crew home instead of returning directly to the US.

Amsterdam was very successful at extremely limiting people returning by sea.  Their Medical Center was literally swamped by people who wanted to stay on the ship.  Their World Cruise is virtually sold out by people taking the entire cruise (I am painfully aware of that since I requested a segment before bookings even opened and am only on a wait list), so nearly everybody was on her round trip Fort Lauderdale, a perfect solution for people who don't fly.

 

According the Pacific Princess roll call, there were about 120 people returning on the ship and only 3-6 were from the Amsterdam (reporter was unsure of the distribution between solos and couples).  That is truly a tiny of the people who would have wanted to stay aboard.

For the life of me I don't understand why anyone would be concerned if 2 or 200 or 2000 people stayed on board after Fremantle.  Cunard put a process in place and those people who were on board apparently followed that process and stayed.  I'm just glad the ship is safely in Southampton, how people get home is their own business.😷

 

I do believe the QM2's experience informed the Amsterdam's response.  The QM2 had a scant 24 hours to get this done while the Amsterdam had days.  They are both under the same corporate umbrella so I wouldn't be surprised to find they learned from each other.

 

One thing that the Amsterdam was able to do (as detailed by someone on their forum), was to provide an escort, someone from the ship's crew to accompany an elderly lady back to the US the entire way.  If they did it for one, they might have done it for others.  If the QM2 had had the time they might have been able to do the same.  As it was I think they did a fantastic job in the time they had.

I am eager to learn more details of what life was like onboard QM2 during her return journey from Fremantle to Southampton.  Were public rooms closed?  How was dining handled?  What restrictions were put in place for this guests who remained on board?  Several tangential references were made about conditions being "bleak" but there weren't a lot of details.  Can anyone point me to any sources?

Best bet is I just ask them if it's ok to share. I just didn't want to put it on here without asking, but if several people want to see it that would be best. It's certainly a fair and balanced account I think. I'll pop up the link once I've heard back from them. They are in NYC and adjusting to 'life after ship' so might be a short while before I hear.
