Casting from phone to cabin TV

Recommended Posts

Has anyone tried to Chromecast onto the cabin smart tv? Wondering if the TV's are even connected via WiFi. Realize each ship will have different technologies,  but just curious.

As a general rule, from limited experience on different NCL ships (only) and land-based hotels, casting (whether it's from Chromecast, Roku or streaming Fire sticks, etc.) are blocked as it occupied bandwidth over those shared WiFi channel.  The most simple and direct method is via a HDMI cable of the proper length, with the necessary output adapters from your mobile device/tablet/DisplayPort/iPhone or iPad's Lightening port - if the HDTV is using it as the input source (other ports are usually firmware locked & blocked and not switchable).  On some of the recent refurbished ships, cruiseline switched to a locking coaxial input cable or ethernet direct wiring, thus the HDMI method is no longer an option.

For personal viewing, I would pre-load, save & store contents on an iPad or tablet ahead of the cruise for playback - a good set of in-ear buds or over-the-ear headset for listening.  We use an inexpensive Fire 8" tablet, small but big enough for viewing, easy to carry with a 8 to 10 hours playback time, and a 64 GB microSD card to store plenty of videos/MP4 (you can use a 128 GB ... up to 256 GB, I think for plenty of storage) - for a little more, the Fire 10 tablet is nicer, faster & for about $100 + tax, free shipping ... toss it around & hold up to abuse; get a good protective case/stand.
