Wouldn't you have to make sure that your credit card doesn't have international transaction fees?

If someone is heading to Manly they could do worse than catch the 135 bus from Manly wharf up to North Head lookout.

Talking generally about local pricing.

But if you're a tourist paying by credit card, you'd have the same international transaction fee whether you buy an Opal ticket with the card, or just use the turnstiles directly with the card. And if you've got cash, you've probably paid an international transaction fee, either directly, or in the exchange rate, if not both...

We are spending a few days in Sydney, so I looked at the Opal card too. Decided to just use my contactless Amex. It has no transaction fees and a decent exchange rate.  Opal single tickets are quite a bit more expensive than using a card. We are planning to go to Manly and also take a train/bus to Featherdale Wildlife Park.  I thought if we do extras and I have to top off the Opal card with 20, it might turn into a chore to get refunded. If we were going to be there longer, I may have gone the Opal card way.
We are staying in Darling Harbor, so it sounds like we’ll have a brisk walk to CQ, or more ferry rides 😊

It’s a bit far to walk from darling harbour to circular quay.

Depending on your hotel. Ferry or light rail would be easier.

I think the minimum amount to top up is $10 not $20 but you would have to do it online and not at a machine.

You are correct, I just rechecked.  Minimum is 20 at a retailer or machine, 10 online.
Thanks
