Live: Crossing the Pacific, Los Angeles – Papeete – Auckland on Crystal Serenity from 22 January – 19 February 2020

Recommended Posts

Day 2 in Los Angeles was a visit to Universal Studios to check the park out - my wife hadn’t been for 30

years while I’d visited about 10 years ago. We enjoyed time in Harry Potter land and Hogwarts and explored some other parts of the park and took the studio tour - we will go back on Tuesday to visit some parts of the park we didn’t get to. We enjoyed the main Harry Potter ride there which had more than enough “action” for us and certainly was not suitable to photograph as you needed to hold on for dear life - my roller coaster days are definitely over

There were plenty of Wands for sale in the store - lots of young budding wizards were delighted with the choice

Of course you can’t beat a bit of action and Pyrotechnics at the Waterworld show which I think has been there for 30 years or so!

Then in the evening we were lucky to enjoy a visit to the Magic Castle in Hollywood - where we saw 5 magicians perform and enjoyed a lovely meal. We live close up magic on the ship and the evening proved to be a rolling performance of scheduled magic shows and impromptu magic in many of the bars. One was Kerry Pollock who I am sure we’ve seen on Crystal. The Castle was very busy even for a Monday night

We also enjoyed listening to the ghost at the piano, Invisible Irma who plays requests and seems to have a wide repertoire - very entertaining

The Magic Castle is a private club and we were very lucky to be invited to visit by our friend and professional magician, John George and his wife Devon who we met on a cruise last year and as luck would have it we are sailing with on the cruise this week where John George will be performing

There are no strictly no photos allowed in the Castle - which is great - and there is a strict dress code (with no exceptions) so to enjoy an evening with everyone elegantly dressed and no phones taking photos of performances or selfies was a rare pleasure

We did snap a couple outside and in the foyer where one is confronted with a “hidden door” bookcase and you need to say the magic password before the owl statue lights up and lets you in

We definitely enjoyed our visit to the Magic Castle and will go again I’m sure

As I post this we are around 24 hours from boarding Crystal Serenity - I think we are a tad excited about that 😁

Glad that you had a nice evening at the Magic Castle. Did you stay very late? We found that by about 12.30 many people had cleared out and there were opportunities to have one on one magic performances.

Good for them, I wish more venues would adopt the same policy....as you know the extensive use of phone cameras in restaurants/theatres/concerts and for selfies, etc.  is one of my pet peeves!!!

Hope you enjoyed your final land day before your board the Serenity tomorrow for the at sea portion of your trip...

Anne...

Have a great cruise Terry. Hope you love French Polynesia. If you are looking for a tour on Raiatea I can recommend Lexcursion Bleu- awesome snorkelling, pearl farm, vanilla farm and a great private island. Recommend car hire in Moorea

The car is booked on Moorea so that’s sorted

Thanks for the Bon Voyage - we’re looking forward to French Polynesia as we’ve only ever heard good things about how beautiful the area is

Did you all notice my new Avatar? Drib decided I needed some new clothes for my holiday cruise and they arrived just in time for embarkation. Some of you who are old enough on the forums will remember the Drib Critic comic strips and their characters from a few years back - could this signal a sequel?

Lets see what adventures Stickman gets up to over the next few weeks

Embarkation day - does anything else really matter? - we’re all packed and ready to head to the port in an hour or so. We can’t wait to get back onboard Crystal Serenity

But catching up on Day 3 in LA yesterday

Trust me - this is the best things you’ll see at a theme park - No Crowds - Tuesday in Winter is very quiet at Universal Studios - which suited us just fine

We could basically go on any ride after a max 15 minute wait (and on one that did have a longer wait the attendant took pity on us oldies and let us go through the Express line with no wait - age has its’ privileges) it was very relaxing so we did several rides and attractions to round out our visit. The nice thing is that staying only 5 minutes away makes it easy to get to and from. Yesterday was quite cool here - even I wore a top!

OMG you changed it!😱

re the window seat~Daddy Longlegs likes the aisle due to his length and I eschew the window due to being seriously claustrophobic. He’s most generous and happily takes the window, thus preventing a serious meltdown.  Two variations on a theme. 😉

Enjoying your posts, very nice to see how you are having fun in LA. Though it has been hard thinking you came all the way from an "on fire" Australia to see studio pyrotechnics in Hollywood! Probably you will be in the Avenue Saloon tonight, so go drink the gin and tonic of your choice!

Stick!!!!!

Good for you for not being too sophisticated to go to Universal.  I love the parks.  I'm waiting for the day I can check-in to the Star Wars hotel at Disney World.  (Don't judge.)

Will there be whole suckling pig on this voyage?  My vicarious desires do hope so.

Indeed I was - the Avenue was reasonably busy and we had a lot of fun - Pulse on the other hand was absolutely dead - our group of three was it!

and Hendricks was the drink of choice 😁

Wow - it’s so nice to be back on board - and what a great first day - the fun of meeting old and new friends and getting settled in and making plans for the coming weeks - and in one case a future cruise that neither of us knew the other had booked - it’s really quite a small world among Crystal friends

Crystal Serenity is looking great and the crew are so welcoming. I saw the wonderful Benjamin last night in the Cove and he asked my name - I absolutely can’t blame him for not remembering my name as he meets so many guests each year but I know that from now on this voyage he will call me by name - he is amazing and the epitome of the spirit of Crystal

I even got a load of laundry done in between drinks - there were plenty of machines spare

We noted the new crockery in the Bistro - I’m not sure how well it will fare in rough seas - but I guess they’ve tested that

We enjoyed sail away at 5pm from San Pedro in the Palm Court - there was a lovely sunset over the Pacific as well

The balloon drop was a lot of fun - the pictures tell that story. Well done Crystal in sending off the World Cruisers in style

Then we dined at Waterside which was very busy after the balloon drop - I didn’t eat all these dishes but all of the choices at our table were lovely so we took a lot of photos

I’m posting menus and Reflections that are currently available and will post the others as they become available

The internet performance is fine (so far) - sadly Glen (and others) you will be able to work ok if this performance holds up (just tell them not to send large graphics to you) - and as others have posted most people are carrying devices now. Well maybe I should have held judgement as I see my photo uploads to CC are taking a lot longer than they did to upload to Facebook - to be fair it’s 50mb of data (so some of the ones I wanted to post may be put up later today I’m afraid as I want to head out for a walk now) - so fingers crossed - but certainly doing email and browsing the web looks to be fine. But just to be clear it’s only the large photo uploads that aren’t uploading at rapid speed - maybe Keith, Roy and I are all uploading at the same time 😂 This post has taken 3 hours to upload!

Today is our first sea day and registrations open for the World Cruise Games - I’ll enter for a variety of “sports” but as I tell friends the main thing about the games is meeting people and having fun - although I would like a Gold medal to add to my collection

My wife has rounded up 3 new knitters from our friends so they will all head off to the Knitting group at 10am - so Gail the knitting instructor will have her hands full - but they’ll have a lot of fun and I’m sure some Ginger Cosmos may be consumed to settle stomachs as we sail south

We slept well - just a little movement which we don’t mind at all. I shouldn’t have commented on BA and their backward facing seats - turns out were sleeping “backwards” which is unusual for us but didn’t make any difference to my ability to sleep - maybe those drinks in the Avenue helped on that front

Feel free to ask any questions and I’ll try and answer them or find out the answers for you - with 6 sea days to enjoy I have plenty of time to do that 😁

i've really enjoyed reading your post from the first day.  the pictures are fabulous so don't worry about them.  the food looked delicious and the balloon drop colors are amazing.  i've only done one crystal cruise and that was last november on the cryatal bach.  that was a river cruise from basel to amsterdam and i was very impressed with everything crystal.  in fact, i was so impressed that i booked a christmas danube river cruise for this coming december on the crystal mahler.  and then i wanted to try an ocean cruise on crystal so i booked a serenity cruise from quebec to nyc for sept., 2021 and also booked a symphony cruise for november, 2022 from lisbon to rome.  so i'm looking forward to all of them.  i don't have the time or the budget for a round the world cruise but even if i did, i couldn't leave my best friend, charlie and 8 year old cockapoo for that long.  enjoy your cruise and i'll be reading your thoughts along the way.

Stickman, thanks for the posts looking forward to following along on this segment. Is there a list of World Cruise Games that you can post as I would be curious to see what is on offer?

Thanks for the great pictures of the kick-off celebration.

Also, it's probably user error on my part, but your Reflections and menu attachments did not load for me.

Sounds like you're off to a great start Stickman, be happy to be out of Sydney - yesterday it was 38 C (105F) in Bondi and much hotter out west. Woke up at about 3.00am and it smelt like someone was BBQing in our bedroom! Needless to say we are counting down the minutes until we depart on Tuesday.

Yes - currently none of this segments are loaded on the intranet - I just went down and chased them up (maybe I’m the only one looking at them online 😉 as they seemed surprised they weren’t there

It’s cool to chilly here today - still wearing shorts and polo (inside mind you) as any red blooded Australian should be at this time of year

It was so sad to hear about the three US firefighting air crew who died in the crash of the water bomber - just tragic. There are so many involved in fighting these fires which seem to have come back to life. Here’s hoping the weather improves - rain? and the winds stay away

It's cooler today and there has been some rain in Sydney but not in the fire-affected areas unfortunately. Yesterday was a real stinker!

As well as the tragic air tanker crash, another five fire fighters were badly injured when a water tanker truck rolled on the South Coast.
