Roatan Pier

On our November cruise on Getaway, we had to tender into Roatan due to the unfinished pier repair and a RCCL ship in port with us. Apparently RCCL has first dibs on docking so if they are in port, NCL has to tender.      It was a nightmare.  We are cruising again on Breakaway in May.  We are trying to find out if the pier is or will be done by then.  Does anyone have that information?  Suffice it to say, if we are tendering, we are staying on the ship.  We would like to know so we can decide if we want to plan an excursion.  Thanks for any information anyone can share!

Was just in Roatan on Sunday, Jan 12th.  Here are some photos of what the pier looked like.  Construction workers (or at least a small crew) were working on some parts of it even on a Sunday.  I think it will be a coin flip for May.

We have been there several times but we are traveling with some them haven't been there.  We did not get off the ship in November but heard it was a diaster.  The guys were considering a golf excursion so we were trying to figure out what the deal was.  There was a photo of Escape posted at the beginning of January that looked like it was docked with a RCCL ship.  If that was the case, I would think the pier was complete.  Who knows?

We docked at the new pier on the Escape on Jan 6.  It was not totally finished, but is useable.  The Symphony of the Seas was docked next to us at the original pier.  We had a rainy, but enjoyable day.

Oh....thank you! That sounds like good news!

We were in Roatan last week on the Escape and we docked. In case you are interested, we went to Infinity Bay Resort and booked day passes.  Snorkeling from the beach is AMAZING!!!  Beach itself is beautiful and there is a huge infinity pool.  We loved our day there.

They have 2 options: a day pass for $20 which gives you access to the resort, or $65 which gives you access plus unlimited drinks and buffet lunch.  If you go for $20 you can still buy drinks and lunch at the bar.  Transportation can be arranged as well and is $20 pp round trip.  It was about a 20 minute drive. website: https://www.infinitybay.com/default-en.html  If you would like to make a reservation or more info  Email reservations@infinitybay.com

Hope this helps.  If you have other questions I am happy to try to answer.

What did they charge to rent snorkel gear? Do you feel you also need a guide or its fine to do on your own.

I second Infinity Bay.  We have been there twice now. The first time we had a driver from Rony's and saw the sloths at Daniel Johnson's.  We asked him to take us to a beach, and that's the one he chose.   Love the beautiful pool and beach.  The water is sooo blue!  Our friends snorkeled in December and their boat was just outside the buoys.  We didn't snorkel but can see how it would be amazing.  We walked down the beach and saw the other hotels/restaurants.  Safe area.  Lots of police presence.

We took a taxi from the port.  Same driver arranged time to bring us back.  $20 at Infinity Bay--can use credit card. We did not arrange ahead of time either date (June/Janaury).  It was no problem.

The Carnival dock/shops/amenities at Mahogany Bay are way nicer than the NCL dock.  It's still under construction.  Few shops/bars.  No amenities such as a beach/beach chairs/tree lined walking path there.

Where is the best snorkeling place from shore? We’re going soon and are probably going to try this place. Sounds great. We’ve always enjoyed snorkeling from shore and have our own snorkeling gear.

Look for the darkish areas in the water to the left on the beach.  That is where we snorkelled and lots of coral and fish.  We also took our own gear.  The resort had a few kayakers in the area we snorkelled just to make sure you didn't get too close to the coral.

Re: the lunch one thing I forgot to mention - If you go with all inclusive you must eat at the buffet which is in the main building on 2nd floor.  There is an outdoor patio at the buffet.  If you get the cheaper day pass you can order food from the bar/cantina which is right near the pool and beach and they have lots of selections. You can even eat at the swim up bar.  If we were to do it again I would go with that vs having to dry off and go inside to the buffet.  The buffet wasn't very big.

Where about? Good snorkeling from shore?

West Bay beach.  You have to take a taxi about 20-30 mins to get there.  There is a public beach area that is free or there are lots of beach clubs or resorts that do day passes.  My DH LOVES to snorkel and this is his favorite spot.  Depending on the area of the beach you chose, you may have to walk up or down the beach to get to the really good snorkeling area.
