Water Shoes - any suggestions?

Recommended Posts

We are not doing a cruise this year, but we are going to Atlantis this summer for a week.

I'm looking for recommendations on water shoes!  The pavement at the water park will likely be really hot and I don't want us to rip our feet a part.

I've been eyeing these on amazon, but I'm looking for suggestions from others as well.

These look awesome! After much humming and hawing I decided not to use water shoes this year. I find they always get full of sand and shred my feet. I'm going to try these rubber Birkenstocks instead, and when I'm in the water just use nothing. I am interested in the kind of water shoes that look like sneakers, though. Some of them you can't even tell the difference, but they dry really quickly. You will have to let us know how you make out!

THESE, appear just like them:

Also for all of the above, I sized UP (10 instead of 9.5 for both DH and myself).

The Alibress felt best for both of us, although DH has fallen arches... I thought we had gone with the flatter ones *for* him but Amazon records say we returned both of the Doussprt ones.

The ones we kept feel just about like sneakers despite having a totally perforated sole! In fact, I'm up in the air about even taking my sneaker-look walking shoes on upcoming So.Pacific trip...

I have never really used water shoes, I always wear Chacos but I wouldn't mind having something with a closed toe for some trips.  I hate the feeling of wet sneakers and I am afraid they'll feel the same.  Do you get that same wet, heavy feeling with these types of water shoes?  Do they drain well or fill with sand?

i adore my keen sandals for water stuff.  they are not cheap, but if you stalk rei or ross/marshalls/nordstrom rack you can usually find them at a decent price.  they have a good closed toe and dry fast, good arch support.  i use them for mild hiking in the park near my house.

i will say, they will get sand in them if you are walkign across dryu sand, but they are swell for actually being wet or water parks

Those are really cute.  We've actually done fine with basic mesh top/rubber bottom water shoes from Walmart.  I wouldn't want to walk 10 miles in them, but for rocky beaches and water parks they have done well and have used them for several years.

They do get sand in them, but are fairly easy to rinse out.

I used these in Tahiti for hiking, wandering around towns, and walking on broken coral to drift snorkel. They are not the most attractive things ever, but they sure do a great job. They have a good arch support, a good tread, and are very secure. With the straps, they are also really adjustable for swollen feet, or just really hot and tired feet. I'm really happy with them.

I have Keen Whispers which are my water shoes on the rocky beaches of New England. They are also great walking shoes, I discovered last summer. I think I wore flip flops the only time I took my kids to a water park. That worked in my 40's. Late 60's have made me awfully shy about showing my feet any more than I must. Lol

Do you have these?  Is the strap a velcro closure or just a decoration?

I don't own these, I just did an amazon search on "Cooloog", and they came up. 🙂  Based on the reviews, I would order a size up, as they run small.  The strap is a velcro closure, based on the images on the listing.

I purchased water SANDALS on Amazon. One pair looks like a sneaker with cut outs and is the name brand Keen similar to these. I've worn them cave tubing in Mexico and Puerto Rico, hiking through Puerto Rico's El Yunque rain forest, and several days of hiking at Disney World. Still look like new.

I also have a pair of this sandal. Did many Caribbean shore excursions wearing them and they also held up very well. I only really bought the Keens because I thought they were cuter.

Just my personal opinion, but the ones shown above that cover the whole foot will be too hot in Tahiti and walking around Atlantis all day.  Also, the sandals shown look a bit heavy.  Remember you are wading through sand and water, so there's a drag on your feet to begin with.  Adding a chunky or heavier shoe doesn't help.

We use water shoes similar to these, and have used them in Bora Bora as well as Hawaii:

They are open mesh quick-dry, and the air flow keeps your feet from getting too hot if you are walking in the sand with them on.  However, the soles are sturdy and keep your feet from getting burnt.

Also, remember a lot of beaches are volcanic rock, so they are not comfy on bare feet.

Thanks for this detail!  I have really high arches, which is always a problem for me in finding comfortable shoes of any type.  Does the Alibress feel like it has enough support for walking on the beach, or maybe even water aerobics?  I love the way they look.

Hi!,

Well, of course that cruise was cancelled (along with five others), so I can't testify as to performance, and subsequently we packed up lock/stock/barrel and moved 750 miles... with some half of it still in boxes in the garage. So just going on memory, they felt pretty much like sneakers, and I was planning to wear them for beach walking and maybe tidepool scrambling. Best luck!
