Rental Car - Corfu

Hello All,

I am due to arrive in Corfu this coming May and was considering getting a rental car and just driving around the island a bit.

Has anyone done this recently and can provide any feedback as to whether this is a good idea or not?

I was considering renting a vehicle from Corfu Sunrise rentals, has anyone had experience with them?

TIA

No.  This past Sept we rented from Enterprise for a week.  Office is just outside the port and down a little.  Everything went well. There was only one surprise.  We did not take the insurance so they put a 1200e hold on our card.  Not an issue for us though.

We rented five or six times on this trip.  We noticed a huge price difference when we shopped.  It might be different for a one day rental.   All of our rentals were standard transmission.

A word of caution.  We have rented many times in Greece and Europe.  This was the first time that I have been asked for my International Drivers Lic.   Every one of our rentals in Greece and Cyprus required it.   Perhaps some new EU reg?

We have twice rented cars at the Corfu Town Port and driven most of the island.  For us, rental cars are a normal way we explore new places.  But I am not going to recommend any specific rental car agency because with the long pause in cruising things are bound to change.  But there are generally multiple rental car agencies that have small rental counters and cars located right at the port and this is where you would want to rent.  Getting around the island is not too difficult but it is always helpful to have your own GPS device or a working phone that can be used for GPS guidance.   Covering the entire island in a day is a real challenge and not our style.  You should do your homework and think about exploring half the island (either North or South),  If you do that and find you have extra time you can always drive into some of the island on the opposite side.

One nice thing about using a rental car is the price.  Cars on Corfu are pretty inexpensive and you can probably get a car for about $50 for the entire day.  For us, the ability to go where we want, when we want, with whom we want, is fantastic.  No waiting at a tour bus for the person who is always late...or for 50 people trying to use 2 bathrooms.  Being able to stop for coffee when we please, eat when we want, etc.  It is all good.

We rented a car for a week or so in Corfu.  Rented it from Enterprise.  Out the port, turn left, and walk up a few blocks.  It was the best rate for us at the time.

We found driving in Corfu, as we have found driving all over Greece and islands, to be very easy.  Roads are good. signage relatively good.

Our second day we drove to Corfu Town. There were about six cruise ships in port.  We parked, walked to town, and then left.  Crowds were awful.  Went back a few days later in the late afternoon.  It was much better.

We stayed at the Hotel Levant in Pelekas.  It is at the top of a hill.  Best views in all of Corfu-across the island and to the mainland.  You can view the island from either side.    Might be a good place to stop for a drink or have lunch.
