They're focused more on slowing the rate of infection than on containment. It can't be snuffed out. There needs to be a certain percentage of the population that gets infected (and thus develops an immunity to this novel strain) before the herd immunity starts to have an effect on reducing the number of transmissions. In that sense it's like the flu in that lots of people still get sick but not all at once. So the total number of people infected may still be high but ideally it will occur over a longer period of time.

I hadn't heard that people that get this virus become immune to it after that.  Have you heard otherwise?

They are still investigating but it appears that it's like other viruses where people develop an immunity to that particular strain. At least that's what I've heard.

I had heard that there was immunity (by an expert in the field but at this point I can’t tell you which one). I went to CVS today, the shelves for even vitamins were cleared out. There wasn’t a roll of toilet paper anywhere in town (as people think I suppose they will be quarantined for 2 years?!). People should take this seriously for sure, but this is just crazy. 🤦🏼‍♀️

I guess we don't need to worry about being quarantined from a cruise now.

Washington, DC (13 March 2020)—CLIA ocean-going cruise lines will be voluntarily and temporarily suspending cruise ship operations from U.S. ports of call for 30 days as public health officials and the U.S. Government continue to address COVID-19.

I blame blame blame the media for a lot of the panic buing that is going on.  On a local news channel one of the presenters said that people need to stock up on esentials like water, toilet paper, etc and even said people need to have hand cranked radios and flashlights.

Does the media somehow have stocks in dormant Y2K companies? 🙂

Why would power and water be affected?  I can see if the entire population is told to quarantine that there would be lack of staff at water treatment and power generating plants, but would not expect that.

So what good is quarantine going to do if there is no cure?  Bori Johnson (PM of UK) had a good point on this.  It will not eliminate the virus but will give organizations the chance to organize things and be better prepared.

Really though if there is no vacination and no cure apart from time then let everyone go about normal life and let people catch the virus become imune (if that is what happens) and some will die, possibly some of my family, possibly me, but restore the quality of life and remove this panic.

Blame the media all you want, but https://www.ready.gov/kit has been listing this since 9-11.  Everything that people are hoarding is on that list.  As we are all being told to by someone who made up that list.

Also, if everyone gets it all at once, I'm not sure what a 4% death rate will end up looking like, or the massive economic impact of all the people who are sick, long and short term.  By spreading it out over time, that impact is spread out a long way, and is a lot easier to deal with.

If you think this is all hype, please feel free to, but for the people who think this is both serious and a good idea- please just hang out with people who think just like you.  Don't spread it just because you think it's a good idea.

I don't think it is all hype. Thank you for letting me know about that list. But how much of it applies now and people listen to the media. This virus is a serious thing.  And if we quarantine or not people are going to get sick. And what happens when we come out of quarantine. Perhaps it is a 4% death rate perhaps 1% per haps 10% who knows.  Unless we quarantine until there is a "cure" when people come out of quarantine there will still be the spread. Unless we quarantine RIGHT NOW everey person world wide and have tests available to identify if people are "clear" before we let them out of quarantine then it all starts again.

I think that saying 14 days quarantine is how long it should be may not be the correct amount of time it could be 14 weeks, 14 months or even 14 years.  Nobody (that I have heard from, media, gov, etc) seems to know right now.

Good luck to everyone.

I don't know what to believe, but this article says those who recover may not gain immunity.

So is it like the common cold?

There are people that have had "coronavirus" and now have "recovered"

I had the cold last year and again this year

Your thought process is greatly flawed.  Our healthcare system cannot handle everybody going about their business as is usual.   People will die as we overload the healthcare system.  Read this article PLEASE  https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.newsweek.com/young-unafraid-coronavirus-pandemic-good-you-now-stop-killing-people-opinion-1491797%3Famp%3D1

That link you posted clearly states that people should have enough supplies to last 72 hours.  People are hoarding enough supplies to last them several years.

That's the key.  If we don't try to control it, and instead just take a "get it over with" attitude, there won't be nearly enough people or equipment or facilities to deal with it.

Sooo much information to read and evaluate.  From hard core facts to rumors.

The only question I have and I cannot get an answer to is---

What happened to Covid 1-18?, --that we are now on 19?

Are their mutations or was 1-18 the common cold.

Thanks

The -19 is because of the year in which it was discovered...2019.

I did not say that.  You have quoted something that someone else said.

Hmmmm....   Looks like quoting is not working properly. You probably selected something I said to quote and it put in what you typed

But what is the answer? when will we be given direction? And leadership? Is the answer to go buy up all the toilet paper and bottled water I can get and lock my self in the house for 14 days?  When does that 14 days start? How will people know when I am safe?

Sorry - phone flounder.  I think the answer is without leadership from the top it falls upon each of us to be socially responsible to slow the spread.  I feel very fortuate our Ohio Governor is being proactive.  Our schools are closed.  Everything is closed.  But without leadership making those decisions, it is incumbant upon individuals to take precautions to limit spread.  The life you save may be your own.

I agree with you.

But I am unsure what to say to our employers "sorry we are not coming to work because we are in self quarantine"?

"I think that will be 14 days but don't know right now"

I know that schools have been closed.  When you say everything is closed do you mean shops, restaurants, gas stations, etc?

I am lucky in that I work from home and probably have enough supplies to last for 14 days, but my children (that are in their own homes away from me) are not so lucky and will look to me for advice. Don't know what to tell them

Does anyone see 2 cases of Toilet Paper on that list ?  I can see the hand sanitizer and cleaning supplies that you can use when not at home, but not the rush on TP !   I have seen online that they are selling 2020 commemorative earrings looking like TP rolls hanging from your ear because of this as well.

I live on the coast and my Florida county and the three bordering counties have no positives as of yet.  Everything is open for normal things to do.

The only place I would avoid locally right now is probably Walmart because of the number of people flocking like sheep to get their TP and other needs.  That's the one thing to avoid as you can't keep your own 'me space' as I call it.  It's not like you can have everyone wear a 3 foot bubble to give you a 6 foot space between each other.

It's sad that I had to cancel my cruise on Mariner, but it turns out that everyone had to as well,  so now I won't have second thoughts about if I was right by doing so now.

We are thinking of a Casino Trip to Biloxi now instead.  We have a hotel booked, but it also has a cancellation option if things in that region changes.  We can all live in fear, or we can all just watch what we do to try and prevent the spread of this virus.

Good point.  I used the wrong word.  The word is everything is canceled.  As far as closed - I was surprised to discover that a local KFC was only operating drive through and another restaurant wasn't open.  For our area I cannot speak to business closures.  Of course grocery stores are open and selling like crazy.  I have a son with severe respiratory issues so we are hunkering down.

This is a unique situation that is changing quite rapidly and I think flexiblity will be required all around.  My kids are elementary age.  My opinion is not worth much and it is presumptuous to think that you want it.  The first panicked wave have emptied the grocery stores.  Grocery stores will be restocked.  I will likely use grocery delivery.  Right now I am using a meal delivery service (think Hello Fresh, Home Chef, etc.).   I think the key is to limit outings and exposure and when you must keep your distance.  Wash those hands as soon as you come home (and every chance you get).  Don't touch your face.  But you know those things.  Sorry if it comes off preachy.   I fear that we may eventually reach a mandatory quarantine in the United States.  Tell your kids everything will be okay, but stock that freezer with food and potentially the pantry with canned goods.
