Our take on this was...

“the cruise director, captain and medical staff are holding an informal Q&A in the main theatre at 10:00am. All are invited to attend. “

For sure, this is serious business. But accuracy in reporting is important.

Trout - is this just your "take on this," or is it what was actually conveyed to passengers? Just trying to understand. Thank you.

it's a much deadlier (around 10x) of the flu and of the many who don't die, they will require hospitalization with severe symptoms.

this is not just regular flu and the regular flu season this year has been anything but mild. you seem to not have any facts at all in your post

2019-2020 Flu Season on Track to Be Especially Severe, New CDC Data Suggests

https://time.com/5758953/flu-season-2019-2020/

The other issue is that we have tools to PREVENT the flu. I get a flu shot every year, so I am doing something personally (other than keeping calm and hoping it goes away) to manage my health risks. I would like to see numbers about how many of the flu deaths were people who didn't get a flu shot.

But with covid-19, all I can do to manage risk is to do my best to avoid exposure. I am NOT locking myself in my house. But I'm not going to take my England/TA trip, either. I believe this lack of personal control is contributing to what some describe as a panic. It's why purel and hand wipes are flying off the shelves. People have very few tools to manage their own risk and are grabbing the ones that exist.

I was the original 'Poster'. I see ****-show written all over this K'dam cruise of ours. I literally could NOT attach all the foreign Newspaper articles mentioning 'Denying Docking' to cruise vessels, or words to that effect. But here's one more. .https://thepointsguy.com/news/ports-closing-to-cruise-ships-coronavirus-concerns/

I think this whole panic is ridiculous.  In the USA 29000 people have died of influenzas and it is no big deal. A handful of vulnerable older people have died--I am 80-- and we are in panic mode.  FDR once said: "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." We see what an inordinate fear is doing.  FYI, I got off the Koningsdam last Wednesday and would go on her again in a heart beat.

Himself....we are boarding the Koningsdam on Sunday. If the scheduled priest cancels, please join us!!

I thought I replied to this, but it may have been lost when two threads were merged. Sorry if I double post.

Anyway, yes, the above is ”our take”, as in what Mrs. Trout and I understood from the announcement made by the Captain at 0800 re. a meeting at 1000 hours in main stage.

Neither my quote nor OP’s (from the “other”, now merged) thread was exactly what the Captain said, but what I shared was as we understood him.

The meeting was indeed a Q&A session, was not mandatory and was introduced by the Cruise Director as a “coffee chat” (coffee and tea were served in the main stage area).

i thought the Captain, Doctor and CD did a great job answering questions to the best of their ability without speculation.

One interesting moment occurred when a guest suggested we immediately return to FLL. This was met with a chorus of boos and the Captain commented “the consensus says otherwise” or something along those lines.

Anyway, Mrs. Trout and I are less concerned about being on board than going to FLL and beyond.

I do reserve the right to change that position, however. 😉

I find this remark insensitive.  That is all fine and good that you have no qualms in  cruising, but each person's tolerance for  anxiety and the unknown is different.  In this scenario, there is no right or wrong, but each person has to go with their gut feeling.

Covid19 has at least 10x the fatality rate of the flu aka influenzas according to your top specialist who spoke today.  A pandemic has been declared by WHO.  It’s not a panic-demic, it’s now a pandemic.

So you can multiply the number for the USA who have died of the influenzas by 10 if this thing is not controlled and people don’t abide by guidelines to help keep it contained and slow down the progress.  The medical facilities can’t handle the situation if it skyrockets too quickly.

I am a pretty intrepid traveller.  Cruised when there was H1N1 but this thing is different - it’s hitting pretty much all of the Northern Hemisphere as well as some countries in the Southern Hemisphere.

I am glad you had a safe cruise and remain healthy.  Sadly that is not the case for everyone who cruises. And some don’t realize until after and by then the ship has got problems.

Well, it has started here in Seattle.  The Seattle Port Authority has just refused docking of the Grand Princess on 1 April and the Celebrity Eclipse on 5 April.  These two ships represent the start of the Alaska cruise season here.  The Grand was to go to Vancouver the next day.  It will be enlightening to see if Canada allows that to happen.  I suspect we will find out within the week if there will be an Alaska cruise season this year.

Context provides clarification:  Dr. Fauci’s statement included his clarification that 10 times figure actually brings the new coronavirus' fatality rate lower than official estimates, which hover around 3 percent. The flu has a mortality rate of about 0.1 percent, so, when considering the likelihood that there are many asymptomatic or very mild cases that have gone undiagnosed, Fauci places the new coronavirus' lethality rate at somewhere around 1 percent.

Just as an FYI we returned from our house in Cabo today. Both yesterday and today a Carnival ship stopped just outside of Cabo for 30 to 45 minutes to allow pax to take pictures and then left as they were not allowed to port in Cabo.

Who told you that those Carnival ships weren't  allowed in port ?

For @Himself and others who say this is “just a flu” and much ado about nothing, let me share this post from FB from a lady in Italy.  I think it explains things we all need to realize sooner than later.  As Dr. Fauci said, it’s not a matter of IF but WHEN.

Here is her post - it’s worth a read:

I am writing to you from Bergamo, Italy, at the heart of the coronavirus crisis. The news media in the US has not captured the severity of what is happening here. I am writing this post because each of you, today, not the government, not the school district, not the mayor, each individual citizen has the chance, today to take actions that will deter the Italian situation from becoming your own country’s reality.  The only way to stop this virus is to limit contagion. And the only way to limit contagion is for millions of people to change their behavior today.

If you are in Europe or the US you are weeks away from where we are today in Italy.

I can hear you now. “It’s just a flu. It only affects old people with preconditions”

There are 2 reasons why Coronavirus has brought Italy to it’s knees. First it is a flu is devastating when people get really sick they need weeks of ICU – and, second, because of how fast and effectively it spreads. There is 2 week incubation period and many who have it never show symptoms.

When Prime Minister Conte announced last night that the entire country, 60 million people, would go on lock down, the line that struck me most was “there is no more time.” Because to be clear, this national lock down, is a hail mary. What he means is that if the numbers of contagion do not start to go down, the system, Italy, will collapse.

Why? Today the ICUs in Lombardy are at capacity – more than capacity. They have begun to put ICU units in the hallways. If the numbers do not go down, the growth rate of contagion tells us that there will be thousands of people who in a matter of a week? two weeks? who will need care. What will happen when there are 100, or a 1000 people who need the hospital and only a few ICU places left?

On Monday a doctor wrote in the paper that they have begun to have to decide who lives and who dies when the patients show up in the emergency room, like what is done in war. This will only get worse.

There are a finite number of drs, nurses, medical staff and they are getting the virus. They have also been working non-stop, non-stop for days and days. What happens when the drs, nurses and medical staff are simply not able to care for the patients, when they are not there?

And finally for those who say that this is just something that happens to old people, starting yesterday the hospitals are reporting that younger and younger patients – 40, 45, 18, are coming in for treatment.

You have a chance to make a difference and stop the spread in your country. Push for the entire office to work at home today, cancel birthday parties, and other gatherings, stay home as much as you can. If you have a fever, any fever, stay home. Push for school closures, now. Anything you can do to stop the spread, because it is spreading in your communities – there is a two week incubation period – and if you do these things now you can buy your medical system time.

And for those who say it is not possible to close the schools, and do all these other things, locking down Italy was beyond anyone’s imagination a week ago.

Soon you will not have a choice, so do what you can now.

Please share.

Yes, that's the second post that the good Father has submitted using the dismissive term "ridiculous".  I called him out on the first, which was in response to  another poster's concern for the advisability of his/her elderly parents cruising.
