Saint John, New Brunswick was expecting 200,000 cruise visitors this season, starting in April.
I love going uptown on cruise ship days as you can sense there is a ship in port before you see it.  The air seems alive with excitement and I never tire of it.

Having said that, I was dreading the cruise ship season this year. The thought of so many people from all over the world descending on our small city at this time was quite scary. That seemed to be the general sentiment among people I know as well.  We welcomed the PM's announcement that the season would be postponed.

The local economy will suffer but these are extreme times we are living in.

I agree, these are the times, and no one wants this virus to spread.  I wish we could shut the border altogether right now, and Vancouver is taking a huge hit, too, with the cessation - albeit temporarily - of the cruise ship season.  No one is happy about it, but it is necessary.  I would be very surprised if Seattle continues it's cruise season during this time.  Let's face it, the virus is the same everywhere, but Seattle is certainly a hot spot right now.

Given that this is a pandemic claiming many lives, fretting about not being able to cruise for a few months and trying to find a way around Canada's decision sure sounds selfish.

So agree with this.  I put it down to the incredible amount entitlement and self importance that some posters  appear to have in spades.

Meaningless to people who are ill, or worse, or the thousands who will loose their jobs/livelihoods over the next few weeks.

I absolutely agree.  I hope we see more travel restrictions soon, both inbound and outbound.  (I have avoided news channels today, so I may be out of date already 😉 )

My 80-year old parents have reservations on the Eurodam for April 15, cruising from Seattle to Hawaii and back.  That cruise is supposed to dock in Victoria B.C.  I'm reading about the "pause" (which ends the day before their cruise) and the Canadian ban, but can't find anything at all about their April 15 cruise.  It's like it's lost in the twilight zone somewhere.  Has anybody heard anything?  Please share!

That notice on H.A.'s website gives the "pause" period as March 14 to April 14.  That does not cover my parents' cruise on April 15.  If someone has something helpful to share, please do!

Your parents’ cruise is in limbo until HAL announces sadly. But, unless HAL can find another port to sail from, I don’t see he happening.  Our cruise which I was supposed to be on is also in limbo.  I don’t see that one happening either but I wasn’t risking it going and the virus.

Your parents are in the high risk group.  Were I in their shoes, I would be staying home.

Our 4/21 sailing FLL-Montreal is in limbo as well.  We just have to wait and see.  Would I like to know right now?  Sure.  But I also understand that the cruise lines have to deal with the situation as it evolves, which means those of us outside the 30-day suspension range will just have to wait.  Obviously, the people who were due to sail this weekend, or who are on ships and have to be disembarked and returned home take precedence.  We all have to wait our "turn" to see what's going to happen.

I do expect our cruise to be cancelled because we had 5 stops scheduled in Canada and the Canadian suspension is until July 1.  But I'm trying to be patient and give HAL time to deal with the most-immediately-pressing issues first.  I'm hoping for a policy to refund my fare rather than just a FCC since I paid a low casino rate and this 1-time sailing for 2021 is currently showing as 4 times the usual fare!  And I only paid 25% of THAT fare!  So a FCC wouldn't get me far to rebook.

Supply and demand.  If this virus abates and doesn't kick back up next fall/winter, I imagine the demand for cruises will be very high with everyone having those lovely FCCs and OBCs to spend, which will drive the prices up.  And then people will complain about how they're having to pay more for the same cruise that they couldn't take.  Again, supply & demand, folks.  Just how it is.
