Self Quarantine. Good idea?

After completing our Joy cruise on March 1st, we felt that after having been in close contact with cruise passengers and especially airport passengers, that once we got home we would self guarantine.  We felt is was the right thing to do, and wondered how many other cruise passengers are doing the same. It is so hard to stay away from immediate family. But like all the decisions being made such as the sports cancellations, hopefully we look back and say we did not overreact.

    How many  have self guarantined after their recent cruise? How many think it is a good idea?

   And, I noticed at the end of the Joy cruise, that it seemed many had a cough. I blamed it on all the disenfectant. Did others on the Joy notice the same.

Pretty much overkill unless you are ill.
 

Thousands of people fly every day and none of them (including me) is going to self quarantine “just in case” someone near me had COVID-19. 
 

Have you been to the grocery store? Been to Costco?  Got near someone at the gas station? There were people there.

Not unless you have been exposed.  The possibility of that is less than you having a wreck driving tomorrow.    Were you in a know infected environment?

thank you! That is the only way to "flatten the curve" of infection and give the Healthcare system time to cope.

 

Italy went from one case on Jan 30 to Health Care overload on Mar 10

 

Do you have people in your life with heart disease, lung disease or diabetes you are giving them a better chance to survive if they get sick

We returned home from a Holland America Cruise yesterday and are self-quaranting.  No one ill onboard and very little coughing on ship or in airports.  We have no symptoms but do not wish to pass it on in case we were exposed.  As we are retired and have a stock of everything it will be easy for us to do.

If you read between the lines, I could have stated it politically incorrect like the following. 

  Since I just came back from a cruise and airport that was full of hacking, coughing passengers, I felt the right thing to do was not visit my 82 year old father, and others for that matter. 

 Peace of mind.

Exactly.  If we don’t self quarantine, the number of infected will become unmanageable by the health system.

So many people get the "Cruise Crud" after a cruise.  It was just blown off. This is different.  And I wonder how many of these "Cruise Cruds" are indeed COVID-19?  Will we ever know?

Good for you for exercising precaution and responsibility. Ignore people here who are WAY more smarter than us.  LOL!

Well considering we live in Maryland, schools are closed, public events are canceled, metro running on special hours, people are now working from home for the next 3 weeks, Governor has asked to social distance, i think if you are on a cruise with over 2000 people is a good thing to do, I would definitely do it specially if you get off on an emergency area port like New York and Seattle. I have my mother who is 80 and grandma who is 100 to think about.

 

Baltimore port is also closed here.

@2+2 THANK YOU for being responsible.  The bit about the connecting flight pax is the kicker - but given that you were in a high risk environment on both the ship and travel, it is the morally right and responsible thing to do.  Even if you didn’t have older relatives, self-quarantining help prevent the spread of the illness.  Given that everyone coming back into the US from Europe has to self-quarantine anyway, why wouldn’t you?  Not sure where you were, but better safe than sorry.

It is not the right thing to do. It is not the responsible thing to do. 
 

Do as you please. It is unnecessary. If it makes you feel better about yourself, go ahead and quarantine. unless you were in direct contact with those individuals, no one else is asking people to quarantine.

Someone who is in close contact with a diagnosed case is supposed to self-quarantine. I believe same flight qualifies.  There was a study done in China about transmission on a bus and it showed a number of pax were infected, many who were NOT sitting right next to “patient zero”.

I will be honest with you, self precautions these days are very important. A very close friend of mine is working from work. She orders food online and very rarely leaves her apartment. Back in January she told me that it might turn out into an epidemic. She is a bit germophobic to be completely honest, but she is a clear example of people's. ANYWAY, what I wanted to say is that if you have a remote job or you just got back from a cruise or some tour abroad, it will be a good idea to just stay at home for awhile. You are doing a good favor to all your neighbors and fellow citizens

The thought of spending a lot of money to go on a "relaxing" vacation cruise where you can't even serve yourself in a buffet and get squirted with liquid chemical sanitizers a zillion times a day all the time wondering if your cruise is going to end up in quarantine is bad enough.

 

Add on self-quarantine in your house for two weeks afterwards and my brain says No Thanks.  I'll pass.

 

Quarantine, don't quarantine.  At this point that's an individuals choice.  I won't bust on anyone one way or another.

Look, if this gets people to stop touching all the bread rolls at the buffet, this will be one big win for the future of cruising.  Dr Sanjay Gupta made an excellent point during an interview; for the vast majority of people walking around, the risks of COVID-19 is on par, or less, than the flu is....but for a significant population of older people, or those with certain underlying symptoms, it can be very serious and very deadly.  The good practices we adopt now and going forward will hopefully protect those around us who can't fight for themselves...and if we stop and start thinking of others just a bit, it might be a step in the right direction.  Kudos to you 2+2, and that you are in a position to take that extra step.  For those who can't, maybe consider just laying low for a little while until this gets under wraps...we are talking about vacation, after all.

What is "cruise crud". Is it real. This was my first cruise longer than seven days.

We were on that cruise.  On our ncl tours we noticed a lot of people coughing. 
We stayed in Haven, so we either we there or in the casino.  We started out for a quick walk around the ship the last night and went right back due to all the sick people. 
Long cruises in the winter always seem to have lots of sick people.

As to the quarantining, we haven't gone out too much due to all the virus activity.  We just don't want to get it.

I think the odds that someone  might have Corona virus on a cruise ship right now is pretty high.  And yes , I agree with you about the last night.

Hubs and I are over 60 and I consider us in the risky population even though thank goodness his cardiologist says his only risk factor is age and nothing else - WHEW!

 

@2+2 I thank you for self-quarantining.  If everyone was as responsible as you we wouldn’t be in the mess we are in, and Italy wouldn’t be either.

On my recent Bliss cruise, there were plenty of kids coughing and sneezing. Kind of surprised they got through check-in but I suppose if no fever, it's not an infection. Kids and adults get colds, especially this time of year. No, not particularly cool to subject others to cold germs, but it happens all the time. I was not concerned about the virus while on board. I washed my hands religiously, did my best to not touch my face. I got off 2 weeks tomorrow and am fine. I work from home so it would be easy to consider myself "self-quarantined." However, as another poster pointed out, there are things outside one's home that need to be done. Life does have to (and does) go on to a certain degree. Groceries need to be gotten, gas tanks need filling, small errands need to be done. So no, I did not self-quarantine. And I don't think that is selfish. I would not quarantine myself unless I felt symptoms or any other reason to fear having been exposed to it. 

 

As with differing political views, I believe it is a mistake to intimate or say that people who disagree with what you feel is right are selfish. Or ignorant. Or whatever. Most of us DO have moral compasses. Many of us can't just self-quarantine after a plane ride, cruise, or going to the grocery store of after having attended a wedding. We work. We need to pay rent/mortgage, pay bills, we have kids, or whatever. If the CDC tells me to do it, I would. Otherwise, no.
