Princess World allowing passengers to stay on until FLL

See the Princess forum.  Someone on the Pacific Princess world cruise has been told they can stay on the ship until FLL - they of course have to sign a waiver.  They are due to arrive in Perth (Freemantle) on 21 March.

Sorry - correction - the ship is sailing back to Los Angeles according to the letter issued to the passengers.

I really question the passenger's report.  Princess announced that it was cancelling all its voyages and would disembark the passengers at the nearest, convenient port.  LA is a long way from Fremantle.  Where is the ship going to refuel?  And what intemediary ports will still be open?  I believe that Hawaii has just closed its ports.  In the meantime, what if one of their passengers became critially ill and there was no way or place to for evacuation?  Perhaps this is the passenger's wishful thinking?

Issue by PRINCESS  -- not WISHFUL thinking.

This is exactly consistent with the QM2 (I was on the world cruise).  Passengers could sign a waiver and stay on if they were medically unable to fly.  They will stay on the ship until Southampton.  You did not have to have proof but they did try hard to talk you out of staying.  I'm afraid of flying.  They said they couldn't make me go but in the end they gave me some anti-anxiety meds and I agreed to go.  

 

It will no longer be a 'cruise' ship but a merchant vessel.  No entertainment and they made sure everyone knew they probably will not be able to receive medical care beyond what is on the ship.  They told one lady with a heart ailment that if she had a heart attack on the ship...she would die.

 

BTW I never used any of the drugs on the 3 flights home.

You make a great point.   I hope that the passengers who have are insistent they they cant fly realize that this will not be a normal cruise and manage their expectations.   i.e.  No "luxury" cruise no medical attention.  More as you put it 14 days of merchant vessel transit most likely followed by 14 days of quarantine at a US military base.  So be careful what you wish for

Worse places to be while this goes on than at sea with relatively few people, remaining passengers and crew, none of whom have had much exposure to the virus.

Ah, the light goes on!  So the passengers who "can't" fly are envisioning a post-cruise, being the few, possibly only, passengers on the ship; continually enjoying their luxurious surroundings and attention to which they had become accustomed.  In actuality, 

however, it does not appear that such will be the case.  I suspect that it will be a rude awakening.  Best that they try to overcome being "unable to fly."  So much for wishing that HAL would follow suit.

And without enough of their prescription medicines, toiletries, internet, etc.  And God forbid, one of the remaining passengers or crew develops OVID.19 on the almost two-month passage to Southampton.  Not a chance I would be willing to take.

Well the voyage to Southampton is only going to take 25 days as opposed to the 2 months left to the world cruise so I'm sure they have all their meds and toiletries since they were supposed to be on much longer.  Don't know about the internet but, at least on the QM2, I think people went into this with their eyes wide open the staff was very blunt describing the conditions on the ship post Fremantle.  You had to sign a very strongly worded waiver.

Good point about the 25 days vs. the remaining two months.  As the possibility might pertain to the Amsterdam, does anyone know if any passengers have taken this option?

As far as I've read, HAL was standing firm on not allowing passengers to return via the ship. Has that changed?

Those passengers on the Amsterdam that are unable to fly will transfer to the Pacific Princess to cruise to LosAngeles.  Princess and HAL are sister companies.  I think there is another sister cruise line in port,  Seaborne that will also be transferring some of their passengers to the Pacific Princess too.

What a great way to solve a problem confronting several cruise lines:  Have one ship within a corporate group make the trip to the U.S.  Now, let's hope LA doesn't decide to close either the port or the airport.  I suspect that having only one cruise ship coming in with a few passengers would be more likely to be welcome.

They must have missed the news, the ship will have them disembark in Fremantle, no one will stay on, except for some of the crew..

Well done re not needing to use any of the anti anxiety medication on 3 flights home.  (I also am afraid of flying, but became less anxious, when my focus changed to my children.)

its disappointing how the company and staff are handling, or not handling, the situation.  Today the captain said we would follow current U.K. guidelines.  But the casino remains open.  Today I was going to sit at my assigned single table in the Britannia (in lieu of Princess Grill) and someone was sitting there already!   It seems social distancing is not taken seriously.  But I do think it’s a guideline. I did not sit at the table.   
 

however yesterday I was walking on deck 7 and saw the Princess Grill all decked out in white table cloths and white coated waiters and waitresses serving upper staff members.  Oh some wine on the table also.   

 

we were told this would be a merchant ship.  Doesn’t seem like it for staff members.

 

i also wonder about the tipping. Ho is getting what now that most of the staff has departed?  Perhaps I should ask for an itemized rundown.

 

at a time when Staff and company of Cunard could shine, well.......

Since you cannot sit anywhere in a restaurant in New York, California and many other parts of the US, it is hard to sympathize with the complaint that someone cannot sit at their assigned table.
