nordski Posted April 5, 2020 #1 Share Posted April 5, 2020 There must be some terrible dust problem in this room, having trouble with my eyes while Queen Elizabeth I addresses the UK and Commonwealth this afternoon. She has just expressed what all of us hope for. And it would be a blessing if it’s on a cruise ship, not on social media. 7

And now that my eyes have recovered I see that I made a terrible typo. It’s Elizabeth II, of course. 1

SkystheLimit Posted April 6, 2020 #5 Share Posted April 6, 2020 Amazing woman! Thank you for sharing this. Can't believe I was complaining a year ago that they changed the cruise and we didn't get to sail the Seine during the day. Seems so petty now. To better days when we meet again. Stay safe everyone.

nordski Posted April 8, 2020 Author #13 Share Posted April 8, 2020 That has to be one of the best replies I’ve ever received on this forum, and I thank you for it! As a student I paid my way by working for a fine gentleman from Scotland and, in folly, he would also invite me to join his curling team. There were times that I understood his comments to me. Particularly if he referred to a “wee dram“. This week, sadly, we had to cancel our Scotland Intensive Cruise. We hope to have another opportunity. If that happens, it is clearly apparent we need to brush up on our Scottish history!

How kind, thank you! Some nice people invited me to go curling and I would have been up for the 'wee dram'. I had to politely decline, however. I can't skate.

Even though she is the first monarch in Scotland of that name since 1707, she is Queen Elizabeth II both north and south of the Border. The issue has even been to court. In MacCormick v Lord Advocate (1953) it was ruled that the use of the numeral “II” was a correct use of the royal prerogative and hence valid in Scots law. nordski Posted April 9, 2020 Author #17 Share Posted April 9, 2020 (edited) What’s embarrassing for me is that I am supposed to be somewhat conversant in British history, but I am certainly thankful for posters who are adding to my knowledge. I will now read up on this court case. And continue to regret that we won’t be in Scotland this August. Edited April 9, 2020 by nordski
