Sounds like a good idea, but it's not gonna happen.  People get sick "the week of"....not a month before.

Cruiselines are in a Catch-22.  Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

 

Anyway...all of these suggestions are just band-aides. The more I think about it, the less I would want to cruise until a vaccine is available.  Too many people are self-centered.

We were in the Celebrity Edge in March and we did it in one of the dining rooms and was done by video .

The past several cruises I have been on have all had muster stations inside of the ship.  I think every ship has enough indoor spaces to hold the muster drills inside. It also seems like it's a better strategy to have people indoors in their muster locations than trying to get to a place outside on the deck if there is an actual emergency.

Older ships have the muster ships outside

Newer ships from the Dream class (i think) ships onward have the muster inside

 

this is not an easy change. in order to change the existing muster from outside to inside, they are various regulations changes they have to make

I wonder why that is.  When I have attended muster outside, it seems like everyone is crammed up against one another.  In case of a true emergency, it really seems like it would be an extremely disorganized area for people to gather.  Is there a specific reason why the older ships must have muster drills outside?

They were doing that on celebrity when the cut backs started what wasn't served was already plated in smaller portions..which is fine with me .I don't like to waste good but I won't eat garbage either.which was not an issue on celebrity ,Carnival on the other hand last cruise I took fed the fishes quite a bit.the food was the worst and the ship did not have the 2.0 add one yet.

The other change I’d like to see is making the doors in the public areas to be able to be opened and closed by a switch rather than a handle

 

On the Celebrity Edge in March, they had such a switch on all public doors that you could click with your elbow

 

Of course this is a challenge on older ships but point is on how to minimize need for touching things in public areas

We all experienced chair hoggers.. i fear my next cruise will include  "space hoggers."  I will hear. "We were here first" stay away."  Or keep your distance take next elevator." I want to be safe but not lectured.

As far as muster drills being inside or outside, on our last Magic cruise we were jammed in like sardines at our muster station.  It was in one of the lounges and every chair was taken, along with people sitting/standing all around the edges of the room on top of one another.   Not sure if there would be enough rooms/spaces for muster to be held inside on larger ships while keeping social distancing intact.  Then again, if sailings not happening for a while  maybe we will be lucky and have this whole covid19 pandemic just be a terrible memory in the future.

For practical purposes, for cruise ships, this means on the promenade deck under the boats.  Newer vessels have reduced the size of the promenade decks (and some older ships did not have sufficient outside deck space), so the use of indoor muster stations became required. 

 

As part of this design review by class, alternative muster locations are designated, again if they meet the requirements for space and the other details noted above, and also special needs locations. 

 

However, if a cruise line wished to change muster locations from outdoors to indoors, they would have to show class a valid safety reason for doing so (passenger comfort is not a concern in an emergency), and all such new locations would be subject to study using crowd and crisis management paradigms to determine their fitness to be a muster location, or if this was an original alternative station, then a further alternative station would have to be found. 

 

This and all the changes to documentation and signage on the ship costs a lot of money, has very little chance of showing a safety requirement for the change, which is why you will not find any cruise ship changing their original muster station locations during the life span of the vessel.

Tell that to the many, many cruisers who have limited mobility issues. 

 

Or the ladies in their evening gowns, the  families with toddlers.

 

Then you have those that feel the need to just push by those on stairways with disregard for anyone's safety.

I skimmed through the answers don't think I saw anyone mention the casino ?  They are absolute plague of germs money changing hands cards being dealt from hand to hand .Slot machines being touched by everyone and don't even get me started on chips I don't think they have been cleaned since the beginning of time . Those things are so gross at times its disgusting . So you either never go . Or just take your chances . There is no way they can keep that place germ free even if you just walk through.

About when cruising returns when you receive a FB post or twitter post pertaining to how they intend to handle all the new guidelines they must deal with. Until you see this I would expect cruises to continue to be cancelled. I would imagine this would come out at least two week, probably closer to a month before they intend to cruise. They, along with all other cruise lines, have so much to figure out and it’s going to take plenty of time. In addition to all the things they must figure out to properly run a cruise they are at the will of so many others that will have some determination on when they start. Hotels, airlines, food distribution, and  opening of foreign ports are just a few outside pieces that must come together for them to operate. I could mention more but below are somethings they must address before cruising.

how to handle inside cruise terminal

muster drills

elevator usage

bathroom usage

how to serve food

how to control physical distancing on the entire ship

how to disembark within ship

how to handle inside cruise terminal during disembarkation 

how to let people leave and return on port days

what happens if corona is diagnosed during cruise

 

until all these questions are answered from the cruise lines you know cruising is still in a pause.

100% CORRECT. I've been saying this in all my posts here on CC. People are putting the cart before the horse. Cruises WILL NOT be the same as before the pandemic. But the senior executives are deciding and negotiating what those changes will be. Once decided it has to be communicated to each ship, then implemented. You KNOW there will be certain employees that will need to wear masks. that means new supplies will have to be sent to ALL ships. All these things TAKE TIME.

I have a cruise set for July but I doubt it will sail but as a society as a whole will have to decide when it will be safe to stand next to a stranger.  Until then there will be no cruises, no amusement parks, no parades, and no other gatherings. How long can society  go without the basic contacts that have made us a civilized world?

Once the cruise lines decide what needs to be implemented, then cruisers will get to decide if that "new normal" appeals to them. Do you want to go on a cruise with reduced services, anti-social environments or the need to wear a mask everywhere onboard?

With those restricts- few people will pay to cruise. If they cannot attract enough paying customers, then the ships will be laid up.
