I understand that the USS Kearsarge picked up many survivors from this tragedy. I had been discharged the prior year and was not on board. During our April 2018 USS Kearsarge reunion, we has a survivor from the Evans share his photos and stories.

My brother was at Tay Ninh in 1968. He said to tell you he was at the Headquarters Company and that the hospital building was right behind them. He also said they would line up there to give blood.

I was TDY in the 80's to Palmerola (Soto Cano) AFB in Honduras.. Air Force types wanted a pool. Funding said no way. The fire department requested an auxiliary water holding facility and they got it. It was painted blue with a ladder but we never made the mistake of calling it a swimming pool.

(The Frank E. Evans was cut in half in June 1969 by an Australian aircraft carrier during exercises and we lost

74 shipmates with the sinking of the front half of ship.)

Was in the Med on the USS Stormes DD780 when we heard about this.  Sad day.

I tried to join the Marines but I was turned down. They did a background check on me and found out my parents were married (US Army Paratrooper, 82D Abn Div 74-90.

My husband;  USMC, 1977-1979 Combat Engineer.

 

He is very ill now (and disabled) due to be stationed at Camp LeJeune. 😞
 

God bless all of our men and women who served. 🇺🇸
