Yes,  really did understand this after cruising for a few decades. It was always one of the few negatives of cruising for us. With the present uncertainties it is a major obstacle.

We started cruising on the Island Princess, (sister ship to the original Love Boat)  I think she was 20,000 tons & 590 Pax.  That began our addiction to small ships.

I remember those ships before they were the Princess 'Love' boats. Sea Venture and Island Venture. Nice, small, ships. Cruising was so very different then.

But it has never been done to the extent that it has over the last few months.  Before you might skip a port or two but having been dumped on the dock in Fremantle with our cruise ending 48 days early on another continent, it changes your perspective.
