No refund on cruise cancelled by Holland

First of all, We would not be booking vacations if we were heavy in debt.  HAL devotees can bash all they want but it’s also not ethical for these corporations to hold our money just because there is cash flow problem.

They are not "holding" it...they DONT HAVE IT. They used it to run the company,  just like they always have. They never did have 100% of peoples' money just sitting around in case they had to give it all back at once.

If HAL can't (or doesn't want to) borrow the money needed for refunds...they may have no other option but to file bankruptcy. That will  forestall the requirement to pay back the money owed until a bankruptcy judge comes up with a plan. Bankruptcy will also keep the lawyers and lawsuits at bay for awhile too.

This isn't true. Carnival Corp is drawing on a line of credit (something like 1.5 billion) and has raised something like 6 billion from  a sale of a portion of the company. Total raised was close to 9 Billion.

9 billion is not even enough to pay off current liability.

Actually they have refunded some on the April cruises we were on that cancelled early but some are still waiting.  I can’t figure out the rhyme or reason to this when several of us cancelled at the same time.

Oh really?  So people in April who were cancelled by HAL already got thousands back?

Not many businesses have the ability to return 3-6 month deposits. Assets an cash on hand are different .

In addition to refunding the fares of those that were on the ships at the time as well as forgiving on board expenses.

No, re-read my post.  I clearly said people who cancelled early.  In other words, people who cancelled before HAL did (early March).

Ditto, the people in our R/C that got refunds, self-cancelled in March before the suspension of the season and certainly long before HAL cancelled our 4/15 Hawaii sailing on Eurodam around April 1st; they read the writing on the wall and were rewarded for it.

The OP was asking about a May 9th cruise cancelled by HAL which I responded that the people who were cancelled by HAL in March have not even been refunded by HAL so be prepared to wait.  Somehow we veered off (which often happens) and started talking about self cancellations.

I received a casino offer today that indicates to me HAL is being a bit creative in attempting to raise operating cash.

The offer was for a free interior stateroom (options to upgrade all the way to Neptune suite, and must pay taxes/port fees as usual) on a laundry list of cruises from fall 2020 through April 2021, including some casino credit and free drinks while gambling.

The interesting part?  Even though the interior stateroom is advertised as being free, we would pay $200pp up front to secure the reservation.  Once the cruise embarks, we'd have $200pp OBC to use during the cruise.  In effect, they are asking us to 'buy' OBC now, which gives them additional cash today.  I thought it was an interesting strategy.

I also got the same casino offer.  Never got a casino offer before from HAL or other lines.  We have been on 49 cruises and have gamble on all of them.  This is the first offer ever.  Not sure if we will take them up on the offer.  If they had cruises from the NY area (we are from NJ too), I would probably look into it.  Not sure we want to make a flight reservation this far in advance.

CCL and others  have liquidity and solvency issues.  Balance sheet speaks itself.

Yep it appears their feet are planted firmly in mid air.  All we can do is wait and report the March refunds as those should be first.  HAL can save some face by getting those out.

Saving face is one thing...at this point, I think they will be satisfied with just saving the company!

Not too sure if the OP cares at this point if they save the company as long as he gets his cash first!

Ya, remember about a year ago when all we worried about was how bad the website was? Seems minor now.

I canceled Internet, drink packages and excursions on March 2, HAL canceled my cruise for June on April 12. I have heard absolutely nothing from them. Is this the way you run a business that wants to have customers in the future? I do not think they plan on having future customers they are getting everything in line to file bankruptcy.  They have 12 grand of mine, I can’t get a response but the standard Waite 60-90 days BS.

I cancelled my excursions and a few other items for my May 4th cruise in early March and when I check my AMEX statement on line the following week the refunds were all there. Still waiting for cruise refund though.

I got so frustrated waiting for a refund. Called my credit card company and disputed. It was about an hour on the phone because I had paid multiple small payments since Sept 2018. Bottom line, they disputed all of them for a total of over $9000 returned to my card. They said I don't even have to contact HAL, that they would deal with them.

Curious how long you waited before contacting your CC company?  And if I'm reading this correctly, they already credited your card?  Thx.

I definitely will report back here! We were on Rotterdam 3/11 disembarked 3/15 in PV and had to head home. Did receive a check from HAL for our return flight on United. Rebooked our same cruise for 2022 and our PCC has been giving updates on Refunds to us and our FCC.
Still 60-90 days so fingers crossed either around 5/15!or 6/15 for our MARCH refunds.

Have a good day

Denise😊

We cancelled on March 7th, a week before they ceased operations. I waited PLENTY! They told me 7 days, then 10, then 15, then 60 days. Why should I have faith that they are going to do it then or ever?

Besides, I understand Royal Caribbean has already refunded many people at 45 days. I am retired and on fixed income. They have $9,000 of MY money. There is no reason they should keep it any longer to improve THEIR financial situation and hinder MINE!

You read wrong. HAL has not credited me anything. Chase Bank is disputing the charges and applying conditional credit back to me.

Yo, wasn't trying to get you riled up, was just trying to get clarification for money owed us and wondered how long you waited since we haven't contacted our CC company yet.  We're also retired and on fixed income and between HAL and Seabourn, we are currently awaiting 4x what HAL owes you so believe me, we feel your pain.  Also, was just trying to make sure that you had actually received credit from your CC company (did not expect you had received anything from HAL) but can you explain what conditional credit means, please.

Thanks for anything further info you can share with all of us.

Conditional credit means the refund shows applied to my card. I have a negative balance of $9K. The "conditional" part is that it is under review by the Citi Bank dispute center. I guess they have to validate with HAL, that I received no goods or services, ie. a cruise. I guess they also want to make sure HAL has not already refunded me, which they have not.

When a "dispute" advances to a "resolved" status, I will have the funds routed to my local bank, which is not Citi Bank.

PS - I said Chase Bank in my earlier post, I meant Citi Bank.

File a dispute with the credit card company.  This seems to be the only recourse. If HAL gets enough charge backs they will finally understand the harm they are causing their customers.  HAL is jerking us all around for too long.
