There is a difference between the French Quarter and the Garden District, where most tourists would be, and other areas of the city.  And my comments about safety were just based on my own personal experience and feelings.

This, exactly...be smart

Wow, seriously? phew, glad I missed that one.

Yes, I know I come across terribly. And I know I sound like a snob. Maybe it was just a one off experience but I had the worst time with people arguing with the crew, leaving trash around in inappropriate places, having children in inappropriate places, etc, and just generally acting terribly. It wasn't the cruise I had a problem with, it was the fellow passengers. Maybe I was just unlucky that week but I won't choose to embark from that port again.

It's not expressing what you experienced that's so terrible! It's having the audacity to call people, whom you don't know, names which are likely and most probably inappropriate!! There is no such thing as "poor white trash"!!

 Poor White Trash?  Seriously?

WOW! my wife, grandson and myself left out of new orleans a few years back on the ncl spirit. we stayed at harrah's hotel for a few days prior to sailing and a day after. we could walk to riverfront, i got up in the morning went over and bought begneits ( im sure that's misspelled) we had a suite onthe ship, my grandson who was about 14 at the time had a great time, and i didnt have any problems at all. we live in l.a. but what problems could you possibly have with people from arkansas? maybe your expectations are a little high, or you should look in a mirror (just saying)

Well, it may not be politically correct but I wouldn't consider it audacity. I did know these people, I MET THEM on the cruise. I guess I'm of the opinion that words are words and we only assign them meaning culturally and personally. I would say "poor" is relative. They were white. And trashy seems to describe people who literally leave trash in appropriate places on the ship IE the main staircase. I did not mean to upset anyone with my terminology. I had a poor experience with poor fellow cruisers. Again, it may have been an unusual experience. I'm sorry if I offended you. I was really trying to answer the question with my personal experience, which was negative. I probably should have done so in a better manner.

I'm sorry you didn't accept my apology. I honestly don't think we are that far apart on this as you do and I wish you nothing but the best cruises and life.

I think you misquoted this to make it look like I said something wrong.  That was my response to the person who said it.

And I am sorry that you don't understand how I feel about  human kind. Perhaps you do live in a different world.

In my world, I know that there are many different people, with many different upbringings, many different religions, many
different ethnicities and so forth.  I do, however, believe that we are all created equal.  Some of us seem to be more fortunate
than others... is that our fault, their fault or simply the fault of our specific society?  I don't know, however, what I do know is that we have an obligation to treat others with respect until they prove that they don't deserve it. That doesn't mean we should base it on how someone is dressed or how they speak but perhaps only how they act.  Obviously if someone is guilty of criminal acts, we may feel  they don't deserve our kindness, nor our respect, but maybe they need some help.

Those of us who are lucky enough to be able to even consider cruising need to be thankful and grateful, and not look down on others but look up in gratitude.  JMO.

Be well.

Again, I don't really think we are that far apart on this, I think you just object to my terminology, and I apologize for that. I object to people that scream obsceneties at the crew because their chosen american football match isn't being shown on the bar TV. I absolutely believe some of us have been much more fortunate than others. But most of them are on the side of the bar with me and should act accordingly, not against the side of the bar that has a limited control of the tv channels shown. Can we make up? Because I am not trying to argue with you at all.

sorry honey, the term "poor whit trash" always has had a distinct meaning and i'm sure you knew exactly what you were saying when you used it in that context. they couldnt be too poor since they were on the same cruise ship as you.  let  it go already, the more you post the less credible you sound.. "methinks thelady doth protest to much"

I have met Indykitten and she is a kind person. I will say that as I go through life I

look at behavior that people do and describe that behavior as being wrong vs. labeling a person.

As in" so and so is a jerk" vs "so and so is acting like a jerk." I have no doubt that Indykitten ran across

some very unpleasant people as I did too on my last cruise. Perhaps she could have described the

behavior rather than labeling people.  I am hoping that this cruise ban will be over soon so I can

cruise again....even if it means having to dodge all the various unpleasant people I usually encounter.

LOL  And I would choose NOLA to answer the original poster.

  • 2 weeks later...

I booked back to back eastern and western Caribbean cruises on Carnival  Breeze in August  2020 out of Port Canaveral.   Looking forward to the  first cruise after the lockdown.  Plenty of masks and sanitizer  and I'm  all set. Looking to book one out of NO later in the year and probably won't  hang out around the quarter before cruise because  it's  too crowded. I think we'll be able to  social distance  more on board the ship than on Bourbon  Street!

Anyone know where to look for information?  Tripadvisor and the NCL website are not helping much.  Google searches are where I am getting Amber Cove.

I am going to book a cruise in either Nov. or Dec. 2021 with my cruise credits. I am looking at either going from New Orleans or Port Canaveral. We also will go down a day or 2 early. Any suggestions??
SHIP Norwegian Breakaway CRUISE PORTS EMBARK New Orleans (Louisiana); Cozumel (Mexico); RoatánBay Islands (Honduras); Harvest Caye (Belize); Costa Maya (Mexico); DISEMBARK New Orleans (Louisiana)   OR Port Canaveral SHIP Norwegian Escape CRUISE PORTS EMBARK Orlando & Beaches (Port Canaveral)Puerto Plata (Dominican Republic); St. Thomas (US Virgin Islands); Tortola (British Virgin Islands); Great Stirrup Cay (Bahamas); DISEMBARK Orlando & Beaches (Port Canaveral)

This will be unpopular, but, I found NOLA to be dirty and expensive. We went day before and had two meals, lunch was good, dinner was terrible. I am not ruling out doing it again, but, definitely stick to the garden district and stay away from bourbon street. I like to party, but, it was trashy. At Port Canaveral, we spent the day before in cocoa beach and it was fine. I didn’t like that it is so far from the airport.

if possible leave from new orleans. book your stay at harrah's if you can. its across from the "riverfront" and a stones throw away from the port. there is a great sushi restaurant a few blocks from this hotel, and the casino is jut across the street with a numberof restaurants in side also.

We have sailed out of New Orleans twice and Port Canaveral once.  The port terminal itself in PC might edge out the one in NOLA, but that's where the comparison ends.  I say this with all due respect to my wife, who grew up in Indian Harbor Beach (just a few miles from PC) and who worked at Cape Kennedy, but there is absolutely NOTHING in the PC area worth doing or seeing that comes anywhere close to what you find on every street corner in NOLA.  We have visited New Orleans dozens of times. and have stayed in many hotels in the Quarter, the downtown area, and the Garden District.  There is a reason that Mark Twain called New Orleans "One of America's Four Unique Cities."  It's not to be missed.

Depending upon your love of jazz and/or spicy and incredibly delicious food, you may want to spend several days prior to your cruise.  If you're just there for one night, pick a hotel near the cruise terminal.  There are several near the convention center that are a short walk from the pier.  The Hilton in the River Walk Center provides direct indoor access to the cruise terminal through the River Walk Mall.  It's a couple of hundred yards from your hotel room door to the cruise terminal.  For the true New Orleans experience, though, pick a hotel in the French Quarter.  There are taxis and shuttle buses from the airport to all the major hotels, so parking shouldn't be a concern.

Things to see and do:  The World War II Museum is NOLA's #1 attraction.  The aquarium is first-rate.  Take a riverboat ride to the Audubon Zoo or to the 1812 Battlefield.  Cafe Du Monde for beignets.  Preservation Hall for jazz.  Pat O'Brien's for hurricanes and dueling pianos.  Ride the streetcar to the French Market (red car) and to the Garden District (green car).  Breakfast at Brennan's.  Dinner at Commander's Palace, Pascal's Manale, Arnaud's, Antoine's, or any restaurant by John Besh or Emeril Lagasse. Stroll Bourbon Street, but shop on Royal.  Stop on most any street corner in the Quarter and listen to music being played by street musicians.

Totally agree!  We have sailed out of both and no comparison.  NOLA is a real destination city.  We stayed in a beautiful atmospheric inn in the French Quarter and had some very memorable meals.  Unless you are coming from Disney, Port Canaveral is a complete snooze fest.
