Difference between Repositioning cruise & Transatlantic/Transpacific cruise

Recommended Posts

A ship making a trans-Atlantic or a trans-Pacific cruise may be doing so as a repositioning cruise.  For example, some ships sailing during the Alaskan season may sail trans-Pacific after that season for the Summer season in the Southern Hemisphere.

Transatlantic and Transpacific cruises cross the relevant ocean but they are also technically repositioning cruises as far as passengers are concerned, in other words they start and end in different ports.  There are cruises which circumnavigate South America available in three sectors each of which is a repositioning cruise.  The general problem for travellers with all repositioning cruises is transport to/from the start/finish.  You cannot park at the cruise terminal and at the end of the cruise walk back to your car.  If you fly one way and cruise the other your car might be at an airport but you sail back to a port. You could get a taxi both ways i.e. to cruise terminal and from airport or vice versa but essentially you are always adding in inconvenience and extra costs on repositioning cruises.  The upside is they are generally cheaper per night.

One small point - there is a regularly-scheduled transatlantic service from Cunard on Queen Mary 2 that isn't repositioning. For most of the year, she mostly goes back and forth between New York and Southampton, with a few side trips like a Christmas round trip to the Caribbean from New York between crossings. I am fairly certain this is the only remaining scheduled transatlantic service after the advent of jet plane travel started reducing the desirability of ship crossings in the 1960s.
