Skift: Venice Marks Historic Day as Flood Barrier ‘Stopped the Sea’

WOW!  Guess I should resist the obvious "it's about time" comment :).  It has taken so long to build that darn system of barriers that some of the early builds became inoperative years before other necessary barriers with constructed.  I cannot help but wonder it was sheer luck that the barrier system actually functioned :).  Folks need to understand that this flood control project has become a joke within Italy so I assume many Italians are celebrating with a few bottles of good Italian wine :).  I suspect that within Italy there is a lot of skepticism that the barriers will work a 2nd time....but we can all hope.

Certainly construction had its problems. A major one was the amount of sediment in the lagoon, which clogged the mechanisms and closures.

So yes, a degree of surprise that it worked the first time that it was needed.

Doesn't mean that it'll still work next year, so fingers-crossed.

But better than relying on King Canute :classic_wink:
