Vienna-Bratislava

This makes much more sense. Again, according to Rome2Rio.com, there are many options. Train, bus and ferry all take from a little over 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours. Note that the ships don't dock in the centre of Vienna; the Danube is a fair distance north of the centre. The central train station is even further from the dock, although I'm sure that you can get there by public transit, which, depending on where your ship is docked, could be very close by.

However, if you haven't been to Vienna before, I would suggest staying put; there is lots to see in Vienna itself.

Been to Bratislava twice, Vienna 6 times.  Don’t waste losing out a day in Vienna to go to Bratislava.  You can do Bratislava in 3 hours, Vienna, I can spend weeks there.

I agree with you. I loved Vienna and could spends weeks there. I don't think I will return to Bratislava.

I'm glad I got to to see Bratislava and I can say I've been to Slovakia.  Would not make a point of going back there.

I guess it was useful in that I can check the country off of my checklist of places I have visited. I would not give up a day in Vienna unless I had spent quite a bit of time there previously. So much to do in Vienna. Or would go to Salzburg.

So, I am in the minority, I guess...  DH has Slovak roots - so Bratislava was a must see for us.

There is lots to see in Vienna - but, outside of a few high profile spots (which we managed to see in one day....) - we found there wasn't that much that was different from many other large, European cities.

Can you see what is important to you in one day in Vienna?  If so, you should be able to make it to Bratislava and spend some time there.

Fran, I grew up in Pittsburgh, which I believe has the largest Slovak population of any city in the US.  We had Slovakian churches, social clubs, bakeries, butcher shops, etc.

When I was in Bratislava I mentioned this to my tour guide, and he told me he had been to both Pittsburgh and Cleveland.  He said Slovak social clubs in those cities would sponsor HS and college students and bring them over in the summer.

My husband's uncle was very involved in the Slovak League in Toronto - and was part of a large Slovak group in Ottawa where he lives.  He taught at Carlton University (journalism professor)  and spent at least 2 of his sabbaticals in Slovakia. There was no way we were going to sail the Danube & not visit Bratislava. DH does not speak the language - so it was a bit challenging when we wandered away from the main tourist area... but we enjoyed our time in the city.

I spent 4 days in Vienna and it wasn't enough for me.

Thank you to all those who responded.   It looks as if we will have to spend the two days in Vienna.   In a couple of ways a pity as we have never been to Slovakia at all and I was hoping to get some Slovakian €uro coins as I am an avid €uro coin collector!!

Thanks again.

Mike
