What Cruise Line Do You Want to Try Next and Why?

Are those all large ships? Our recent three cruises have been on ships of 100, 400 and 1000 pax. I loved the smaller size.

Yes, we prefer large ships. So it's a very nice thing that there's a size ship for everyone's preference.

Oddly enough, the Royal ship we sailed most recently had a 6,000 passenger capacity or so and no long lines anywhere  - boarding, theaters, excursions and getting into ports and debarkation.

Some of the smallest ships we've been on , say 2,000 passenger capacity, had the longest lines of all!!  Go figure!

Will the ongoing effects of COVID influence your decision?  For example, I only want to go on a big ship as it may be  easier to social distance or they probably have more health resources on board.

Forgot to address this. For me, I wouldn't cruise until I felt it was safe to do so. I don't see a big difference between a larger or smaller ship. Smaller ships carry fewer people (and often have more space per person to start with than larger ones).

We've taken two Hurtigruten trips. One on their Midnatsol to Antarctica and the other their Norwegian coastal cruise on MS Lofoten (now retired). Loved them both. But I'll tell you the truth I was pretty disappointed about how they handled outbreak of COVID. Lack of forthcoming info. But we liked them SO much I'll look into them again. If you go to Hurtigruten on CC you can see my and others comments....and GLORIOUS pix . I wish we could do it with you.

I had picked Midnatsol for my coastal cruise as many people recommended the large viewing area onboard. Unfortunately I had an opportunity arise to do a small-group tour of Roman Naples with a well-known expert in this area, so I had to choose...

I would've loved to go on Lofoten. That's right up my alley.

Every time we have tried to do a Royal cruise, we ended up going elsewhere for various reasons. I really would love to get on an Oasis class ship asap. I know some people have a million reasons why they hate it. I have yet to be on a vacation where I hated that there were too many things to do.

We look at Viking because the ships look great.  But the included shore excursions and booze add very little value to us.  Dollar for dollar, we always seem to be better off getting a similar or lesser room on a lower cost line and using the extra $ for shore excursions and specialty restaurants.  Maybe some day just to confirm our feelings.

But to me most of the all inclusive extras are of no use, Mrs G isn’t allowed fly, so we are limited to local cruises, we don’t drink. Haven’t done a group excursion in years, much prefer doing our own thing, though would probably do some on an all inclusive, and one reason we cruise is to get away from email access. So a lot of the extras are lost on us.

We're looking at them because it's Galapagos. Escorted is small groups that go in a couple of different 'directions' which is what first attracted us. I'm not sure if you can do your own thing there. Maybe a lesser version of Antarctica. This ship was built specifically for the Galapagos. Only has 100 pax and almost an equal # of crew. But we'll have to see. They want a large deposit which we're unwilling to pay almost two years out.

They've announced that she will be used for training but that they'll have a few cruises with passengers.

I’ve posted about the X Galapagos / Machu Picchu cruise tour from last year, just prior to Flora and Xpedition getting approval from Ecuador. It was a bucket list item for my DH, and he continues to marvel at how wonderful it was, more than a year later. Lima and Hacienda visits were way cool.

Galapagos has been on our list for about 30 years 🙂 That's about how long ago we went to Machu Picchu and sure glad we did. It wasn't a mob scene then. You just walked around at your leisure. I remember we even had a little picnic.

We would like to try a river cruise in Europe, possibly Emerald Waterways because DW would very much appreciate the swimming pool.

We actually way back in I think 2003 or possibly 2004 had a river cruise booked over the Christmas New Years week out of Amsterdam only to have it chartered out after we made final payment. (I won't give the cruise line the courtesy of mentioning their name but would never ever consider booking with them again.

I have also looked at with interest a Gate 1 travel destination that combines Greece with a Greek Island cruise on Celestyal (probably spelled incorrectly).

In mid March 2020, we were booked on a Gate 1 Egypt tour that included a 4 day Nile River cruise.  I think it was 3 days before our departure that Gate 1 called us to say that they were cancelling the tour because of COVID exposures on the river cruise boats.

Had we been on the prior tour date, we probably would have been exposed and detained or worse in Egypt - Whew!  Very close call!!

"Exposed or detained or worse in Egypt"; that sounds like a title for a horror novel and/or movie.

I wonder how Gate 1 would have handled the situation to try to make a very uncomfortable situation less daunting.

Princess...purely because she's one of the few major lines we haven't tried yet. Then we look at the itineraries and think otherwise.  We also would try Disney or Cunard for their unique take on crusing.

Not too fussy or loyal to a line as cruisers....our main stipulation is new ports/countries.

We had a Xmas Market tour scheduled for this December 2020 with Gate 1 and in early June was notified that they had cancelled. We had also booked air with them (pre-paid) and as soon as Lufthansa cancelled air in October we had a complete refund to our credit card in less than a week. Very impressed with Gate 1 and will book with them again

We've traveled a number of times with Gate 1 and they were always terrific.

Thanks for your input...always glad to hear some personal experience with a company.

We're going to book the Xmas Market tour for Dec 2022.

We've used them twice, Central Europe and Peru. We were impressed both times. They really are excellent getting the details done properly.

Seabourn has piqued our interest. We've been on dozens of mass market cruises, but then tried Crystal. We've decided when things go back to normal we'll cruise less often, but enjoy a finer experience.

And their guides are super! We've done Turkey, Israel, SE Asia and more and those guides offset the sometimes tediousness of traveling with a group.

We had multiple guides, different ones in each country, in Central Europe, and they were very good. Throughout Peru, we had the same guide and assistant, and they were fantastic.

We had the same one for Thailand, Cambodia and Laos but then a different one, Vietnamese, for Vietnam. I figured it was some kind of legal issue. And I tell ya, Gate 1's hotels are far nicer than the ones we stay in when we DIY 🙂

MSC.  We had a family cruise booked for July 2020 😪  Price for 7 days was cheaper than 5 day on Carnival Fantasy out of Mobile.

One of the reasons I want to try MSC is that their prices seem very competitive for what they offer.  I wonder if the fact that MSC is a private company with a huge shipping business allows them more flexibility on pricing to grown their business more rapidly.

I definitely agree with you on the hotels.
