It is utterly stunning, isn’t it?

On our first visit I *had* to eat in the open air on in of the restaurants on the ‘balcony street’ with the fabulous views.  A simple aubergine dish (no meat/fish) and a half bottle of wine was the equivalent of 50 or 60 quid but, hey, how many opportunities are you going to get to eat with a view like that?

We’ve also done a trip over to Nea (iirc - the new volcanic island thrown up in the caldera).  Very interesting - and very hot.  A bit stinky as well.  There are lots of meters and sensors, communicating directly with the vulcanology dept at University of Athens.  Our guide told us they’d probably have 36-48 hours notice of a major pop, but that they’re sometimes warned of little grumblings and advised not to walk that day 🌋

Santorini is beautiful but is in danger of being spoiled.

We visited in 2013 and really enjoyed it, there was only 2 ships in the anchorage that day.

On another visit in 2019  I counted 8 ships, we tendered ashore but caught the next tender back to the ship.

Way to overcrowded, enormous queues everywhere especially for the cable car up into town.

I had a couple of holidays on Santorini back in the 1980's/90's. Don't think I'd like it now...

Very sorry to leave Santorini because the photographs were stunning and brought back such happy memories. Britboy is right that the island gets very crowded in the summer months but we were so lucky to go in November when there were only 2 smaller ships there. We hardly had to queue for the cable car and the resorts weren't crowded at all.

The Corinth Canal photos are stunning and I would love to do a transit so the 'bucket list' grows even longer!!

Now to Athens, and again, we visited in November so it was pleasantly warm and relatively uncrowded. We got the HOHO bus just outside the terminal so we got to see a bit of Piraeus first....

My last few were taken from the HOHO bus as it toured Athens city centre. You can see that the city was getting ready for Christmas

I'm looking forward to Istanbul. It is such a city of contrasts and very definitely east meets west....

Well here are a few more maybe less well known.  We had an overnight in Piraeus  so 2 day ticket on the hoho . Didnt go quite as planned as IIRC

there was some sort of strike on so traffic was bad and the busses

way off any schedule.  We had a lovely time walking the area  not on the

hill with the main buldings.
