Our first visit to Messina was in 2003, and we had a great excursion to Taormina and Etna. Etna has erupted the year before so there was new lava everywhere. Unfortunately, the photos are in the loft.

it’s a good thing this is a virtual cruise, as I see Etna is currently erupting again.

we revisited in 2019. We had a dawn sail in through the Messina Straits and went on a wine tasting tour

We have not really cruised to Sicily but we did do a "cruise and stay "

of a fashion.   It was a coach tour of Sicily but  we flew to Naples to

pick up the coach had a half a day and a night in Sorrento then

Coach down the scenic coast before joining the motorway to

the  35 minute Cruise  ( ferry) across to  Messina.

All we saw of Messina follows  as the first night was in Naxos.

Coach didnt stop so reflections and an old camera  hasnt  helped.

Last 2  pics are of  Mt Etna  from our room.  I have over  500

pictures of places in Sicily but as it was 2013 would take

a long time to work out just where we were as the itinerary

is not to hand and other than Naxos or Taormina  which could

be a tour from the ship I would need to see what was reachable.

I do know we did not go to any of the places shown on

"Montalbano"  Maybe I will try and see where we were the next

day and post a couple more.

I haven't been to Messina on a cruise, the nearest I've got is cruising through the Strait of Messina and then past Strombolli.

I have been on day trips when visiting family. On one occasion my BIL borrowed the parish mini-bus from his brother and I remember we were stopped by the police and they checked what we were doing and who we were. I think it could have had something to do with the name on the side of the bus - Corleone!  On another occasions there were several cars and we went up Etna before going on to Messina. While we there I do remember watching the astornomical clock at the Cathedral. I don't know where my photos are of those trips are now though.

I got up a bit earlier than you to see Stromboli. The sky was clearer. Took a very expensive excursion in Sicily, not very safe as no airbags in the mini-train

Our first call to Messini was an unscheduled med-evac.  We docked quite early and the ambulance arrived within a couple of minutes to transport the casualty

Just a few pretty poor pics from my phone.   We’ve done one further call but I can’t access pics from that

Here’s a picture of the famous clock in Messina. We’ve been several times and been to Taormina and also on an excursion called something like ‘in the Godfather’s footsteps’. Sounds a bit cheesey, but was actually very good as you see some pretty villages and lovely scenery many of which were used as locations in the film.

This scene - I suppose it’s not very similar at all, but I love that scene and I love Greece and Greek sun and it’s wet and miserable here, so ...

I love anything to do with Mamma Mia! Thanks for posting that clip.It certainly helps to lift ones mood. (I love Greece as well, of course!)
