Triumph Eastern question

I am considering the Triumph Eastern. However the ship is only in San Juan from 5:00 PM until midnight. Not sure what there is to do then.

This means that only 2 days are port days and all the rest on days at sea. I do love the relaxing days at sea but I wondering if it is almost too much, especially with two teenagers.

Any comments from those that have done this itinerary?

As usual, thanks for your help!

I had the same concern, however I hear she often arrives in San Juan early. I'll let you know in a couple of weeks

I was on this cruise last fall..and am going back on the Triumph this fall. There isn't a lot to do in San Juan at night if your aren't into partying or taking a tour. You can't do a lot of sightseeing in the dark. But sailing by El Morro in the dark is breathtaking.

We decided to shop and most of the shops were closed. We headed into Old San Juan and it was garbage pickup time and we had to walk around the garbage. The streets are narrow and jammed with cars..so we were squeezing through moving cars. They don't welcome visitors like the other ports.

We had tablemates who took the illumination tour and pronounced it "totally cool". Your teens might like that.

However, St. Thomas and St. Martin are just awesome ports. There is so much to do and the beaches are just incredible. The people on both islands are wonderful. My cousin had an emergency in St. Martin and needed to call home...and the security guard at the port not only helped her use an international calling card, but he dialed the number, walked us to the bank and helped us with the transaction and got us a taxi to the beach.

The Triumph is a fun fun ship for all ages.
Your teens WON'T be bored.

I guess it just matters when you go, I was on Triumph last June and LOVED San Juan. We took a taxi to the Goveners Mansion and then walked down to the ship. Shops were open. Got black pearls for 1.00 an inch, went to an outdoor cafe, got a bunch of t-shirts, went to a cigar shop, then McDonalds. Fed the birds on a beautiful landing right on the water. Hundreds of birds, a great site to see. Went to an out door market with local craft people. NEVER felt unsafe and found the people very friendly. My 17 year old loved it.

Another question for recent Triumph Eastern Itinerary cruisers. We're cruising on her in January. Which side of the ship has the view (while docked) of the harbor. We were on this itinerary in 1998 and we had the most breath taking view and I really would love to choose a cabin on that will give me that view. If anyone can help me on that question I'll be grateful. Thanks.

What is that illumination tour all about? Is it appropriate for kids ages 8 and 12?

Just came back yesterday.

GREAT cruise. Nice ship.

You have about 2 hours of daylight in San Juan. Took the kids downtown for some brief shopping. Then got right back on board.
Not much else to do.

We LOVE the sea days and so do the kids (they're 6 and 8). Teens may be bored.

Ship docks on the port (left) side of the ship.

Hope this helps.

Was on the Triumph in March and we arrived in San Juan around 5:30. By the time we were off the ship it was 6:30. A major cattle call with trying to debark the ship. Not much to do with the ship getting in that late. IMHO this is a wasted port.

How late did the spa stay open when you were in San Juan. Sounds like a good time to get a massage

We just returned from the East and West. San Juan wasn't much. We did some walking around. Some t-shirts and stuff and back on the ship for dinner.
We were lucky and got in a little early. But not a lot to do. Carnival scares people into believing the only way to see the island is on thier approved tours. We saw all their tour vans stuck in gridlock traffic as we walked around them glad that we were not trapped like them in tin cans. Narrow streets and lots of cars.
