That is all a myth.  He did not discover anything new or unknown.  He was not proving the world was round - that too was already known.  He was trying to find a shorter route to India, and failed.

Columbus wasn't ridiculed for believing the world was round in a flat-earth world.  Everyone thought the earth was round.  He was ridiculed because his math was wrong, which it was.  He thought the planet was much smaller than it was, and that he would reach "the indies" by sailing west before he ran out of food and died.  No one had attempted it before, since everyone was working on the correct diameter of earth, and knew they would not be able to make it before running out of food.

I had one worse.  It was on Admiral Cruise line just before filing bankruptcy.  The Captain doubled as the CD and played his accordion one night as the entertainment.  No Joke.

 

Admiral was acquired by Royal Caribbean Cruise Line in 1988 and was discontinued in 1992. At least Azamara lasted longer under RCG.

Columbus was not disproving a "flat Earth."  He was trying to find  a better way to reach China.

 

As early as the sixth century B.C., Pythagoras — and later Aristotle and Euclid — wrote about the Earth as a sphere. Ptolemy wrote “Geography” at the height of the Roman Empire, 1,300 years before Columbus sailed, and considered the idea of a round planet as fact.

Actually Columbus was the worst cruise director for another very sad reason.  It is an interesting fact that major deadly pandemics were started in North America in the 1500's (Measles, Smallpox and Influenza) from sailors and passengers arriving on Spanish ships (like Columbus).  These pandemics were highly lethal to the native american populations since their immune systems had not experienced these diseases before.  And of course vaccines were not invented yet.  The term pandemic disease was not used until the later 19th century.

Some thoughts:

 

Cruise lines are not going to abandon their huge investments in Florida port terminals no matter what they might "float" to the public.  

 

Flying into Cozumel is a pain.  Best airport is Cancun which implies a boat trip to get to the island.

 

Its not expensive, $300 R/T on average, but inconvenient with some flights from popular US cities taking 12 or more house to complete, changing planes, etc.

 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) serves as the national focus for developing and applying disease prevention and control, environmental health, and health promotion and health education activities designed to improve the health of the people of the United States.

 

And, yes, your trip to Cozumel to cruise could have CDC oversight, especially when returning to the US.

But how many of those places were discovered by getting lost?  Iceland was discovered a Viking who got lost on his way to the Faeroes.  And the Viking discovery of North America was another case of getting lost, on the way to Greenland. 

 

So before signing on for a cruise with Eric the Red, check out the Bob Newhart bit about the submarine captain announcing that 'in a few minutes you'll be gazing on the familiar skyline of either New York or ... Buenos Aires.'  [4:30 in, but the whole bit is hilarious 🤣]
