Florida Will Sue...

I suppose a person without interests can feel bored anywhere.  I am within fifteen minutes of a beach and where my boat is moored;  about an hour from Yankee Stadium and Citi Field; an hour and a quarter from Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Opera, and New York’s museums; maybe 90 minutes from a couple of casinos with show venues, and ocean beaches on the south shore of Long Island, and two hours from some of the best ski slopes this side of Aspen.

I might agree that the “worst thing” about Connecticut is the weather.  It rains some time, we get a few inches of snow in the winter, there may be a dozen nights each year when we need air conditioning rather than open windows.  But then, pretty much everywhere has weather that some people do not like.

Have to smile because of although you live in CT most of your post is about places in NYC.

I was born and raised in NYC and worked there for several decades.  Sure, most places named are in/near NYC — but I do not have to live right next to everything - just within reach.  For example: I do not have a supermarket right next door (and actually prefer it that way - I sure would not want to be next door to international airports or baseball stadiums, for that matter.)

What ???

You think DeSantis might be operating with a view to his political future rather than in response to the mandates of his moral and ethical core?

Well, getting back to the original topic of this thread, looks like Florida's governor has followed up on his threat to sue:

https://www.clickorlando.com/news/local/2021/04/08/gov-ron-desantis-sues-cdc-demanding-cruise-ships-be-allowed-to-sail-immediately/

Anyone can sue anyone.  All you need is a lawyer (they come cheap), a paid filing fee, a platform to announce that you have filed a suit and a publicist to spread the word that you have going to get justice for the people.  .  The next step is just a bit more difficult - actually winning the case.

I personally don't think I could feel comfortable booking an ocean cruise yet. Too much is still up in the air.

What if I pay all that money and due to a new raise in cases or a ship that has a bunch of cases all the ports we were going to visit close up?

False positives have happened in a few instances on the rapid tests, too. What if someone tests positive on a rapid test? By the time they figure out their PCR test comes up negative we might find we're on a ship getting turned away from all the ports in that case as well.

What if the port we're supposed to sail out of doesn't open up as expected, or closes back down due to a rise in cases?

Just too many entirely plausible what ifs that will likely be resolved when more people are vaccinated which is likely to happen in the next few months. As much as I feel eager to book a new cruise, I can wait six more months.

DeSantis lawsuit looks like nothing more than political posturing to me. He has to know it won't go anywhere for months. He feels comfortable suing at this time because he feels confident well before the suit can go much of anywhere it will all resolve. His suit will be completely irrelevant but he'll claim the victory.

Look at his history...it's crystal clear how he operates as well as those around him.

Somehow I think that's what he's saying. If it walks like a duck....

We were getting dangerously close to a political discussion here - so I’d like to thank you for redirecting towards commentary about how wildlife moves about.

This whole thread is a political discussion.  All politicians, including DeSantis, act in ways to serve their perceived political interests.  Nothing new here.

One of my favorite excursions in FL is to Shark Valley in  Everglades National Park. The bird life is wonderful and alligators abound.

Around the Port Canaveral area, you have the Cape Canaveral National Seashore and Merritt Island National Wildlife Reserve.  Great places near a port to view wildlife!!

Anyone done a tour of NASA at Port Canaveral recently? I'm curious what all is open now. It seems like some of their tours could easily be made very safe with social distancing.

You spend a fair amount of time on a bus. Their website has their guidelines. Reduced capacity, masks etc. It is a federal agency, probably not impacted by DeSantis policies on just throwing everything wide open.

You mean the same thing every politician does? Make no mistake, even if it is an "unpopular decision" a politician is doing it for reasons they want to take credit for at some point. They only get called out on this when someone is against their stance.

It's refreshing to have a politician that has a platform that is predictable, and actually follows through. Instead of all of our ineffective repeaters of the flavor of the week.

You have the right not to support his platform. But you best get used to it. You're going to see more of him before you see less.

Ah gotcha. Did something similar when we toured the Boeing plant north of Seattle.

Oh that sounds terribly interesting. I wonder if they'll do that again eventually once people are vaccinated? I've added it to my list to check into when we go out there for a cruise just in case.

IIRC they told us it was the largest building in the world! Imagine multiple 787s all under one roof.

Not since Oct 2019 on a port excursion made during our Snowbird itinerary...but I have to say it was just amazing. Will do it again pre-cruise April 2022 with the extended family....the grandkids are excited about this KSC tour.

What exactly is the governor of Florida trying to accomplish?  Does he realize that he won't be able get cruise ships back in Florida if he says that they can't require vaccinations?  I don't get it.

He going to be a candidate for higher office.

I ‘d rather live 8 minutes away from here (taken yesterday) than from JFK or Broadway (both of which  are about an hour away).
