You need to go back and read Host Kristi's post where she posted Carnival's policy where it clearly states "The dress requirement for children is the same."

Ok, so does everyone consider jeans to be blue jeans or denim jeans? I have a nice pair of khaki jeans (I wouldn't even call them jeans except the lable on the inside say "Jones Jeans") that I do wear to the dining room on casual nights. So is this acceptable?

If it said "required wear", do you think that would make a difference? I would suspect it wouldn't change much. Some people just like to "march to the beat of a different drummer". Just like on formal night, there are those who buck the trend. Really, how inforceable is the dress code anyway? You think they will bar you from the room, throw you off the ship or send you to your room? On a previous cruise, we had a group picture taken and some from the table behind us would up in the background of the picture. Of course, the sloppiest of dressed from that table was the one who shows predominately in the background. Didn't realize till the next day and, sadly, it was the last formal night. The picture is memorable though .........

I don't have time to read each post here, but just got back from Destiny.

 

In Capers, they will list attire for the evening. Shorts were acceptable one night during the week (late port day, I think).

 

On the last night, however, I was GRAVELY disappointed in two tablemates who showed up 1 hour late for dinner, wasted, in denim short-shorts, boxer type shorts, he in a muscle shirt, she in a sweatshirt, unshowered from the pool, fresh from a nap.

 

Ruined the whole last of night photo taking and in my eyes showed alot of disrespect for others at the table.

For breakfast and lunch in the dining room, even shorts are acceptable... so to answer your question, yes.

There should be a separate table for the denim wearers where a curtain is drawn around the entire table to prevent other cruisers from this unsightly scene.

When we were on the Holiday a few weeks ago there was one man in shorts. When entering the dining room, he was told that he had to change before entering. Needless to say he was not happy but he did go and change.

I am SO glad to hear that some uncouth person was actually not allowed in the dining room in shorts! icon_eek.gif It's about time Carnival started enforcing THEIR written rule - "NO shorts in the dining room at night". Yaaaaaaaay!

On our last cruise we did not recieve our luggage until after dinner......and I wore shorts Jean shorts at that(nice ones not cut offs )with a golf shirt ....but per carnival post in the caper....1st night dress code is lifted for that very reason not every one has their luggage....now the rest of the week I wore the proper attire....but you know what nobody seemed to notice or care what I was wearing and they only spotted my Jean shorts on the way in and the eway out because the rest of dinner you could not see my legs since they were under the table and out of sight....but then again like my wife said not to many ppl would say anything to me anyway....since she says I look mad all the time LOL...or maybe it is my big bald head....but at least i did not wear a hat to dinner icon_biggrin.gif

I would like to wade in on this one. From reading the cruise critic posts, before i was on my first cruise, I thought that the main dining rooms were similar to formal restaurants and so i followed the discussion threads about attire and kids in the dining room very carefully. I loved the cruise but the dining rooms on the Victory at least are not similar to formal restaurants and it is not formal dining. It is full on, bright lighting, very noisy and so busy that noone will care what you wear or hear the kids if they are a little noisy. The dinner is hardly formal service but very friendly and wonderful. It was fun to dress up. But no one will notice and you will not feel out of place if you wear jeans for dinner. (caveat: only one cruise under my belt, early seating on easter weekend so lots of families)

I have always avoided responding to the Jeans/No Jeans post in the past but I am bored at work today so figure "why not chime in here" . .

I ALWAYS bring jeans on vacation. Jeans can be dressed up with great shoes and a sparkly top. I don't wear them to formal nights (I dress to the hilt) but wear them at least one (sometimes two) nights. And not to toot my own horn but I look better in my JEANS then some of the supposed dress up cruisers do - i.e. too short/tights dresses or slacks, etc.

My feeling is as long as Carnival doesn't state "No JEANS in the dining room" and I look good I am fine.

Hey, if you guys are aiming sarcasm at me (halos, triguy) about the curtain, so be it. However, we were ALL FRIENDS at our table and ALL wanted nice photos of ALL of us on the last night (even the offenders wanted some).

Besides the 'unsightliness' of it, it WAS just plain rude to come into dinner like that - an hour late, filthy, poorly dressed and barely coherent.

I glued rhinestones onto my jeans and sewed lace around the cuffs? Garsh...I think that might be purdy close to formal for me!

I am joking, ofcourse.

I don't recall who wore what on my cruise, nevermind if someone came wearing jeans. I do remember some lady falling out of her dress on formal night right in front of our table AND our wait staff. [img]http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif[/img] No where on the Capers did it say anything about dinner theatre!

I think that even if CCL put the "no jeans" rule in writing, there would still be people who ignored it and wore what they darn well wanted to. Some people just don't take the time to read stuff (like that one lady on my cruise who scheduled a 9am excursion even though were docked at noon).

This debate has been argued ad nauseum. Our grandchildren will be arguing about it. Their grandchildren will be arguing about it when were are cold and dead in the ground.

Jeans will still be around, even after we are long gone. And there will still be someone who wears them to the formal dining room on a cruise ship.

Keep it in the short grass, y'all!

Heather. Obviously the popularity of denim is finally fading. Here in NC, where 90% of all denim is made (even for overseas apparel makers) orders are now falling rather quickly. So much so that layoffs are occuring. The manufacturing of denim is not moving off shore either. Retailers are seeing a drastic reduction in sales of denim apparel. Not sure if any plants have closed, but wouldn't be surprised. So those that like their denim duds, stock up. In general the American consumer is looking for something a bit more classy after dumbing down dress appearance for 30 yrs. Fashion is of course in a constant state of flux. Price paid and designer label or not makes no difference. Denim is denim.

nikken79, as you can see, there are quite a varity of opinions on this subject.
They won't keep him out of the dining room for wearing jeans.
Will others pass. say anything? probably not.

Guess it just depends on your own comfort level.

For me, cloth napkins & table cloths, Matre d', Wine Stewards, Waiters & asst. Waiters, rate as at least "Resort Casual"

Please, don't let this posting scare you off from the Board, there is a wealth of information to be gathered here.

Bridges: I found the dining on Victory to be quite upscale. There was linen, china, crystal, silver, tux'd waiters, wine stewards, and maitre d', no pricing on the menus, people OUT of their jeans, elegant edibles, etc.

Dim lighting does not an upscale experience make. It may have been a little "bright" in there because a) people can't read the menu or see their companions in the dark, b) ladies in pumps on a moving ship in the dark and on stairs just isn't safe, and c) it's not meant to be a 'romantic' venue when you are seated with others as you typically are.

The noise was probably because they were serving 1/4 of the pax on the ship at that time and the noise was unavoidable. However, I didn't find noise to be a distraction and enjoyed the conversation at my table without straining.

With all the stuff listed in my first sentence here, denim is not appropriate, which is the topic...

I have to disagree. The dining rooms on Carnival ships ARE considered a formal dining atmosphere.

When you go to a restaurant with:

Maitre 'd
Wine steward
Cloth table linens
Waiters placing ladies' napkins in their laps
Waiters dressed in formal attire
Waiters having an assistant
Good china
Real silver
Crystal glassware
Formally placed silverware
Bread/butter plates w/butter knives
Your wine in a standing wine bucket being poured by your waiter
ETC.

"Dis ain't McDonalds or Applebees, my friend!"
