Jeans at dinner?

nikken79

Recommended Posts

I told my grandsons that they must pack dockers and dress slacks for dining room attire. They will be allowed to wear their new jeans at lunchtime, (we usually eat lunch on the lido)but not at dinner, out of respect for the traditions of cruising. I never mind what others wear, but I would like my family to look their best at dinner. Happy cruising everyone.

"Nothing should be more highly prized than the value of each day".... celebrating cruise #30 soon

Aruba is terrific. We bought a timeshare at the Marriott Ocean Club in 2000 and I am one who would have never thought I would ever own one. But the price, Aruba and MVCI (Marriott Vacation Club International) are something special. And besides, we got a great bargain. We were even able to use the facilities there for our port day on the Destiny a few years ago. Marriott is now building another timeshare resort right next to the Ocean Club.

Hey Linda--What I want to know is did the misguided couple live to tell their friends about their cruise???

I am of the opinion that unless you don't have your luggage the first night or have packed everything but your jeans on the last night, then jeans or denim of any kind, shape, color or price do not belong in the dining room.

This can be avoided on the first night by either embarking in something more suited to the dining room and the weather or by packing something in your carry on to change into before dinner.
We had the earliest dining time on our last cruise so we wore slack to dinner the last night then packed them and put the luggage out, saving the jeans for our long travel home.

I know this is a touchy subject. But I have to disagree on the formal restaurant theory. It might be different on newer, larger Carnival ships, but the Elation was not formal at dinner. Everyone was fancier, including the staff on Formal nights. But, the other 5 nights were just nice dining. True it's not outback, but wouldn't be a 4 or 5 star restaurant either. I don't know where you ate, but I never had a napkin put on my lap, etc.on my cruise.

We were on a very busy spring break cruise. The two formal nights, everyone was surprisingly dressy, we even saw a lot oftuxes. We got very dressed up and were by no means over dressed. However, for the most part on the other 5 nights, you couldn't tell most people changed for dinner!

quote:
Originally posted by hdawson:
Heather. Obviously the popularity of denim is finally fading. Here in NC, where 90% of all denim is made (even for overseas apparel makers) orders are now falling rather quickly. So much so that layoffs are occuring. The manufacturing of denim is not moving off shore either. Retailers are seeing a drastic reduction in sales of denim apparel. Not sure if any plants have closed, but wouldn't be surprised. So those that like their denim duds, stock up. In general the American consumer is looking for something a bit more classy after dumbing down dress appearance for 30 yrs. Fashion is of course in a constant state of flux. Price paid and designer label or not makes no difference. Denim is denim.

I agree...denim is denim. But the gold standard of blue jeans will not fade. It has and constantly will evolve. And if you think that people are looking for classier ways to dress, I think you need to take a look at what the younger generations are wearing...unless you think classy is thug-wear. Your trends might fly in Metrosexual, New York...but it certainly is not the case in other parts of the country.

We always thought bell bottoms and polyester were a thing of the past. Now look what is hip and trendy. But I am not here to argue about the trend of jeans that baffles sociologists to this day. I'm not even here to argue about the moral implications of wearing jeans in the dining room. I think this topic has been argued enough without having to toss my hat into the ring.

I used to have the "turn my nose up" attitude towards anyone who would dare wear jeans to the dining room on a cruise. Then I actually went on one. I can honestly say I don't remember if anyone wore jeans or not. I am sure someone did...but I was too busy having fun to notice. I didn't wear jeans during my cruise, but far be it from me to snark on someone who did. THAT, would be bending to the lowest common denominator.

So, I guess you could say I am neutral about it. As long as you don't come and do some sort of dugaree strip tease during the main course, I don't care what you wear to the dining room. Wearing jeans is not going to make my dinner taste any different.

Keep it in the short grass, y'all!

Dosi: They lived to tell about it, but barely.

They were too wasted to care about what we had ALL agreed on for the last night (dress pretty and smile nicely for the cameras!). We were a table of 10 all agreeing on enjoying our last night together.

Completely classless.

If the ships' formal dining rooms aren't formal in some opinions, what could be added to make them formal? I'm NOT slamming! Just curious as to what I am missing in a formal dining atmosphere that others seem to be regularly experiencing.

If you are comfortable wearing jeans (clean, non-worn out of course)to dinner, then wear them! If you spend your vacation trying not to offend every one of the other 2000 people you will not have a very good time. Wonder where I could find a denim tux...........

You could probably ask some country singer...I'm sure they have loads.

Or maybe even Justin Timberlake. I seem to remember him and that Spears-chick wearing some matching denim stuff. Their relationship tanked shortly after that.

Maybe it's just because I'm from Oklahoma (although Texas is like us in this respect as well) but it is not uncommon to see a well groomed gentlemen in a pressed shirt, tie and coat with blue jeans and boots on. They never look out of place. While I would not suggest that attire for Formal night I don't think there should be a problem on the more casual evenings. People should keep in mind different dressing styles from different areas of the country and world.

Even though it's heavily leaning towards "no jeans", I'm going to chime in anyway.

Even on the first night, when we may not have our luggage, I have something else on other than blue jeans. Usually I have on a pair of black jeans. (I know, jeans are jeans...) Even then, under those circumstances, I feel uncomfortable in those surroundings.

Pure and simple: No matter how you want to spin it, jeans of any sort are completely inapproriate in the dining room for dinner. (The exception being the first night only.) Period.

Disclaimer: On late port days, Capers specifically states whether or not shorts are acceptable. For example, Aruba on Destiny is an 11PM sail away. They understand that folks might want to board for dinner and go out again without changing twice, so they accommodate for that.

HOWEVER, that said, if it's not in Capers that farm attire is acceptable, leave the farm attire in the cabin.

BTW: Aren't jeans a little heavy for the Caribbean, anyway?

I always bring 4 or 5 pair with me. I'm ALWAYS cold..even in the caribbean. At night in the bars they have the AC cranked so after dinner I always change into my "clubing" clothes which include jeans.

Just curious - Do those who think Jeans are an absolute NO-NO in the dining room (on non-formal nights of course) over 50 or so? I think that younger people accept jeans as part of their MUST HAVE's in their wardorbe and wouldn't dream of traveling without them. We feel they can be worn just about anywhere with the right tops/shoes/accessories - where older people rarely wear them even at home.

Again I am just curious -

Nope, I'm significantly younger (at least I like to THINK I am! ) than 50 at 40.

As for being cold in the bars and such, I didn't consider that, but I've never been uncomfortable on the ships in any venue as far as temperature goes.

I guess when I think "cruisin' the caribbean", I'm thinking hot, sunny days - way too much for jeans - and not cooler bars and showrooms.

NO OFFENSE INTENDED!
