Chilean vaccination drive setback

Article in today's WSJ discusses the recent increase in COVID cases even though Chile is one of the leading countries to vaccinate its population. Turns out that the Chinese vaccine that is used for the bulk of the two-jab dose given thus far has a low (16%) efficacy rate after the first jab. Two weeks after the second jab, the efficacy is 67%, per the WSJ. One dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine is 85% effective after 15 to 28 days and 91.3% effective after the second dose, continuing even after 6 months.   

As this was not well communicated to the population, many stopped taking the extreme precautions required during quarantine and isolation. Now the infection rate is surging, as are deaths.

This is a setback for the country (which I love), and for cruisers who want to visit and help support their tourism economy. Sigh.

Wow, that is bad news.  We are scheduled to be there in Jan 2022 and Chile's COVID record was encouraging.  Muddies the water on whether to go.  Thanks for sharing the info:)
